Thought I'd share what I learned when I called Japanwoodworker at 2:30 today. They just received a shipment of Shigefusa knives, including some 270 kitaeji gyutos, 180 wa handled chefs, a nakiri and a western petty.

Who did you talk to over there? I believe they are all mine :)

I talked to Connie and she did say that some were already spoken for.

PS-- didn't get any for myself. Waiting to side if Lotto pays off.

I think that I'm still on their wait list, which was supposedly 2yrs long about 3 years ago. I never heard from them and it seemed like they're weren't getting many shipments in. Interesting to know that they do occasionally get knives in. Maybe I'll hear from them some day.... I already have 2, but I would really like a western kitaji... or maybe something kitaji and single-beveled....

Is there a reason why the 240mm gyuto is $63 more than the 270mm gyuto? :scratchhead:

OK, I don't have a shig!?! AUGH!!! Added to my cart, took payment, received call 2 hours later saying they were out of product and that I could be put on wait list!!! Wasn't there another thread here about crappy customer service?

That stinks. Sometimes the phone is king, especially during a gold rush. They may have to manually update their product database, and could have fallen behind this afternoon.

WB, I guess I should've tried the phone but went online and saw numerous shig's...I think they don't update period. If you search for shigefusa on their site, you get like 59 hits...all show as being in stock and you can add any of them to your cart. You can even check out (purchase) and they will charge your card. They didn't even leave a message, but I noticed the missed call and returned the call...they said no reason to leave a message that this was just a courtesy call to let me know they were out of stock...I could keep my order and they would fill when possible...told them to go %$&# themselves...
:IMOK:

I bought my first high end chisel from them in 1979....I don't think they have updated, but it also seems that their software has no ability to indicate available stock so you do end up with a cancelled credit card charge. Always do phone or email with these guys.

yeah, I think they are pretty famous for rarely updating their web site. Last year their Shigi prices were super low -- but's that's because they never had any to sell so they did not keep the prices current.

All for the best, hate rushed decisions...but love those Shig's...and JWW person on phone (Ginny) was nice, website is just not very efficient...and no I didn't really tell the person to @#$% off, but was extremely frustrated.
Cheers!

Guys, there is another source for Shig's, JNS. If you really want one today, get in touch with Maxim and see if he has any left in stock. I grabbed one last week as a pre-order, they came in yesterday and I'll have it early next week.

Very nice. Connie was very helpful to me. If you e-mail her, she'll give you a list of exactly what's in stock. As for me, I'm a ways out in the queue for a honaki Usuba.

+1. Maxim is great to deal with.

+1 on Maxim.

On a side note, So has some shigefusas left in stock, last time I check this includes two 240 kasumi western handle gyutos. Takeshi also mentioned he has a kasumi yanagi with saya and a 150mm kitaeji deba with saya heading his way.

Johnny.B.Good likes to make fun of me. I am sure there are some who have more than I have. None of their stock really interests me at the moment; just gyutos.
