WTB Magnolia handle for 150 petty

Sounds great! How much? If its one handle it won't end up in customs too. There is a gyuto which took me months to make. Now it needs a sidekick petty to go with it but I can't make a proper handle the way I like it.

WTB Magnolia handle for 150 petty

To be specific I'm not looking for a custom but the regular stock handles our knives come with. What handles were you thinking childermass? I'm in the EU. Thanks!

WTB Magnolia handle for 150 petty

I'm making a 150mm size range petty knife and I'm looking for a handle. Preferably ho wood and horn ferrule, octagonal. Maybe an old yanagiba handle that came off clean? Open to offers, handles are really hard to find these days!

    About Atoma lapping plates

How are the grits? I'll be lapping in the range of 1000, 5000 and 10k. Usually I use a fairly fine one, say 400 or so. How would you comment on grits? I was thinking of getting the 400 for finer stones.

    About Atoma lapping plates

The Atoma comes with a steel lapping plate and then the diamond plate is a thin one, attached with some double sided tape? Does it come single sided? Can I buy a replacement lapping plate and then create a double sided lapping plate? Like a coarse/fine etc. Thanks!

What to inscribe on a knife in Japanese?

Looking for a little help with kanji. So I made a blue steel gyuto and I think to make it complete I'd like to inscribe at least something on the blade. Can anyone suggest what to inscribe and in what letters? I'm guessing I'll use some web-based calligraphy to find a font but what kanji to...

What clay/material/coating to use to make Kurouchi?

This is the best one I've seen, the Tanaka. After years of use, almost looks like new:

What clay/material/coating to use to make Kurouchi?

I know what forge scale and burnt oil finishes look like and I know how to achieve them. Except none of those look like any of the kurouchi finishes I'm seeing on Japanese blades. That's why I'm wondering if they're doing it differently.

What clay/material/coating to use to make Kurouchi?

For example my 10-year old Tanaka which has seen everyday use for about 6 years still has most of the kurouchi finish on it. It's very strong, hard and looks like a special material or finish baked onto the blade. So that got me thinking they're dipping the blade into something or coating it...

What clay/material/coating to use to make Kurouchi?

Hi all! I hope someone can help me out who has more experience with knife making. I've seen many types of Kurouchi finishes: it seems as though every smith has their own secret recipe and method for making a Kurouchi finish. Has any of you tried their own? Is there a clay I could try? I'm...

JNat Beginners Guide to Buying: Stories of Success, Pitfalls, and Fails

I'd just like to add my comment about 330mate. I've bought a dozen stones and knives from him since 2012 (including fully custom knives that took some months to complete and stones selected for specific purposes), never had a bad deal. I would recommend him in a heartbeat, especially for cheaper...

    Another Boardsmith shoutout

How's the warping? I've had numerous end-grain boards. Never seen a one that stays flat after washing and drying and washing and drying. But they've all been supermarket-grade.

    What sharpness is worth it?

You make me want to go try an R2 knife now! :p

    What sharpness is worth it?

Having gone full circle from blue to white to VG10 to blue to white in 10 years I'm now in the phase of seeing benefits of easy sharpening. I'll gladly sharpen a white steel knife for about a minute and on two stones. Way better than taking 10 minutes and 5 stones on a VG10 and still struggling...
