I don't know if you can permasoak but it works wonderfully with just a splash. There really is no need for any more water than that. I have tried soaking mine for a minute and ten minutes but it's no different than just wiping some water across the surface and getting to work.
Can you post the measured length of the edge? I know that Shigs are (sometimes?) measured from the handle. Would also like to know the thickness of the spine above the heel. Thanks.
I personally would mount it to a base with epoxy. The epoxy will act as both a sealer and a stabilizer for the crack in conjunction with the base. You can then seal the sides with whatever you normally use.
