Building a guided sharpening system for full size stones

I have a wood block cut to 15 degrees with a stop at the bottom. Same idea. I mainly use it when teaching someone about rolling through the belly. It is much more obvious what is going on with the fixture.

    Heat treatment destruction

I don't have experience with inductive stovetops, but from seeing induction forging demos I would think that they would be something to be careful of with knives.

    Entertaining Hard Ark Video

I watched the above video and the soft arks one and enjoyed them both. I've watched quite a few of Keith's other videos too and enjoy his vibe.

Covid: the shape of things to come

At one point the welts of my hives were undulating as if there were insects under my skin. I actually thought that I was hallucinating, but I asked my wife if she was seeing the same thing and she was.

Covid: the shape of things to come

Above posts were from mid December. It now appears that this was a symptom of Covid. I had blood pressure issues and vertigo in the same period. I gave blood at the end of March and learned that they were doing antibody tests and that I could get results a couple weeks after my donation. The...

I'm frustrated, need your help !

Ha! To the people who make knives with 2" X 72" belt grinders this is known as the 2" notch. It's very common among beginning knife makers. I have done the same thing with stones just like I think you have.

Covid: the shape of things to come

Not disagreeing with anything that you said, but Moab Utah did strongly discourage mountain bikers from coming there early in the pandemic to keep them from taking up the few hospital beds that they had.

    The Washita Thread

Just did a SG on what I think is my Lily White and got 2.44. I didn't think that my decagram scale would be accurate enough but things were heavy enough that it seemed pretty good.

Need some help: hollow ground chef’s knife

To me, the whole thing sounds like a down hill slide. The knife appears to be thick behind the edge in the photo. The hollow grind will make it hard to thin aesthetically without a belt grinder. I guess how badly you want to try Elmax would be the deciding factor in whether to get off the slide...

    Pocket knife help

My edc pocket knife is cheap enough that I can hand it over to security and buy another on the way home without batting an eye. Kershaw Hotwire. I thin bte as soon as I get home on a 14" wheel. The steel is crap, but it will take a good edge quickly and I don't mind sharpening it often.

    Etching Q.s

My understanding of banding is that it happens at the time the steel is transforming from liquid to solid and dendrites are forming in the transformation boundary. Short of re melting the steel in a crucible, I don't think the smith has a way to change the dendrites. However, carbide formation...

    First sharpening advice

I would not assume that the inconsistent bevel width is user error. It could be, but that would infer that you're making the same angle errors, in the same areas, somewhat consistently. Mainly I didn't want you blaming yourself for an issue that you likely weren't causing. Don't worry about...

    Etching Q.s

Off hand I would say that there is more than banding going on there. I wonder if @Kippington or anyone else has ever run into this much banding on their 52100?

    First sharpening advice

Variations in the bevel reveal width can be from different sharpening angles, but they can also be from differing thicknesses behind the edge (read grind) and can be corrected with thinning. As evidence, even a constant angle devise like Edge Pro or Wicked Edge can produce wavy bevel reveals...

    First sharpening advice

The width of the knife divided by 3 is approximately 20 degrees. The width divided by 4 is approximately 15 degrees.

The Greatest Sharpening Stone in the World

I use my Crystolons with water and propylene glycol without degreasing the stones. As far as I can tell the pg doesn't solve the oil in the stone, but it breaks the surface tension allowing the water to wet. Originally I thought it would slowly work the oil out of the stone. Maybe it is, but not...
