    which Jnats for max contrast??

I have a hypothesis I had not encounter before, it might have some merits, it might be nothing, appreciate input from the pro's. I totally agree that Natural Vs Synthetic is a major difference in the contrast due to the different scratch patterns (Synthetics being much more 'V' shaped grooves.)...

Grinding wide bevels - how to?

I use a self build 2 inch belt grinder, and the girding is done against a horizontal flat plate. As for how to reach consistency, a few parameters: 1. Practice, practice, practice. I would recommend getting a cheap 5mm steel plate, cut out a knife shape and grind wide bevels, then try on a 4mm...

Grinding wide bevels - how to?

Matus, Had put a lot of effort into the topic a few month back...the conclusion for me was, learn how to do it freehand, its painful, but worth it at the end. Ill try to explain my reasons: 1. Each bevel is different, the width, distal taper, outline, length all affect the rate the angle of the...

Carbon Skillets - how to forge?

New project, new research... Decided to try and build a carbon skillet, just spent quite a few hours researching, but still missing some crucial data: 1. Steel: Which steel is appropriate for a carbon skillet? I would assume the 'simple' ones, 1070, 1095... any one knows? 2. Thickness: saw some...

Cost to Get Started Japanese-style Knife Making

Matus, Totally agree that the list above doesn't make sense in general, but I already had a grinder and belt sander, so pretty much the only thing I bought was the Anvil. I preferred to buy a really good one to last or to easily sell if I dont get hooked. Besides, the whole process from the...

Cost to Get Started Japanese-style Knife Making

Obliviously initial price range may vary pending on your personality and ability, the sky is the limit, and it is easy to reach $20K easily, however, I started by targeting the low part of the expense range, my cost were: Post forging tools (Stock removal) : $200 1. Angle Grinder: $80 2. Belt...

Cost to Get Started Japanese-style Knife Making

my 2c, grinding a knife Vs forging, cost and romanticizing: first of all which one will come out better...probably grinding a blank :-( the forging process is quite 'dangerous' you could burn the steel, create stress points and a S*** load of other mistakes. BUT ! the following is mostly a...

Benuser, thanks for the answer, it is clear you know what you are talking about ! few questions if I may. 1. what is 'facetting' 2. I never thought of using a soft backing, always used granite, what is the purpose of soft backing? Creating convexity? would you use a soft backing for a chisel...

Coarse stone Vs 3M Gold Sandpaper

Have been seeing a lot of discussions on Coarse stones lately, but no mention of using high quality sand paper, for example: https://www.lie-nielsen.com/product/3M-gold-sandpaper-220-grit I've been using 120, 220, 400 progressions using 3M gold sandpaper, as a hobbyist knife forger, I use them...

Grinding Jigs - getting that crispy Shinogi at the tip

Bare hands will help a lot avoiding burning the tips! but it really f****s the fingers in so many ways...some of us really like the 'battle' marks :-) thanks for the process description above, I guess thats about what I usually do, grinding that last 20% of the taper at the end helps clean...

Thanks for the assistance, just finished a new blade yesterday, got the Shinogi quite well, my temp solution, elbow grease. Grinding Jigs - getting that crispy Shinogi at the tip

If I analyze the diagram Kip shared above, my conclusion is that the only way to make a Shinogi parallel to the edge in a strongly distal taper knife, is to do it free hand and slowly raise the angle the closer I get to the tip

Grinding Jigs - getting that crispy Shinogi at the tip

I'm a small time knife enthusiast, my particular favorite is Wrought Iron San Mai with strong distal taper and crisp Chisel grind...but after building about 7 knives I still haven't been able to get that crisp shinogi all the way to the tip. no problem with 70% of the knife, just the tip when...
