Gorgeous blade! Always understood a funayuki to be shorter and have a (proportionally) wider profile than this, as it was traditionally a fisherman’s utility knife - a hybrid of a deba and a gyuto, with a double grind - see image below. Thinner than a deba, or even a mioroshi deba, but still a...

    Maksim's re-handling method - glue type

Sugru is interesting, entertaining and useful - their youtube channel provides a good introduction to how many ways it can be used: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCSvXVeL2aefGxGZ9DB52uoA

    Maksim's re-handling method - glue type

Many thanks to you all - always amazing how generous community members are in sharing their expertise! These solutions sound simple, maybe even idiot-proof - which is a key consideration for me!

    Maksim's re-handling method - glue type

Interesting - thank you, F-Flash! Since the material in Maxim's video appears to be a a fairly soft paste, I assume it's some sort of blend of beeswax with carnauba wax, mineral oil or something similar. It seems like this sort of blend wouldn't harden and solidify, but presumably it does...

    Maksim's re-handling method - glue type

I've found Maksim's videos on changing wa handles videos very simple, clear and informative: But I've been unable to decipher the name of the the paste-like material he uses (in part 2) to firmly bond the tang to the handle, after he's seated the tang by burning it into the handle. A...

Horizontal swipes on onions are overrated

I imagine this guy has cut quite a few, too - but ... yikes!

Horizontal swipes on onions are overrated

Brilliant, Kippington! To each his own, of course, but your method is quick and productive, and it allows you to handle the onion much more securely and provides a better view of your knife* as you work: efficiency & safety - an excellant combination. * And a lovely knife that is, indeed!

    Knife findings

I, too, would be interested in hearing what other KKF members think about Masamoto knives. I'm just beginning to learn about Japanese knives, but I get the sense that Masamoto is a large scale manufacturer trying to present itself as a purveyor of hand-made knives. Do they buy from, or...

what do you guys use for pocket knives?

Thanks, Tiger! I’ve considered the DF2 in v-toku2, but I really liked the super blue edge .... Though I imagine I’ll come to regret it if I don’t grab one from this sprint while they’re still available.

what do you guys use for pocket knives?

Excerpt I have to agree that the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 - Super Blue (C28FGYE2) is an excellent EDC - particularly with the Hitachi aogami super core clad in 420J1 stainless. I was fortunate enough to own one ... but it escaped. I would be pathetically grateful to hear from anyone who has one...

    Hello from Novanglia

I'm just getting started with learning about and using Japanese knives - a revelation! This forum was specifically recommended to me by a Portland, Maine knife seller and sharpener, Evan Atwell, who also recommends your forum (only) on the FAQ page of his website: strataportlanddotcom Looking...
