Need help buying new sharpening equipment from the ground-up

Hi OP, I think I have experience with all of the stones you mentioned, including Cerax, King, Shapton Pro, Shapton Glass, Gesshin and most of the stones mentioned in this thread. May I preface with two things: 1. All of these are quality stones, and will get your knives shaving sharp -...

Great, looking forward to your thoughts! I am tempted to try it out as well.

    Sharpening stone for SLD steel?

I second that. Nothing special needed, I actually quite like SLD so far.

Help with building my sharpening set up

Hi OP, some quick thoughts on your question: Since you're preferring splash & go stones, you have a couple of options incl. JKI's s&g line, shapton pro/glass, Naniwa chosera/pro, Suehiro Debado, Nano Hone, diamonds plates/stones, etc. From my personal experience I can say that the Naniwa...

Naniwa Snow White Junpaku - legit?

I still don't know what this stone ist. Regardless, I took it for a ride last night. Sharpened two J-knives, one in Aogami Super and one in SLD. First, I splashed some water on it. It got instantly absorbed. Did that a couple of times, the stone acted like a sponge. So I held it under the...

Naniwa Snow White Junpaku - legit?

Yes, that's what I expected to receive. Mine also came without a Naniwa box, just a small cardboard box with bubble wrap.

Naniwa Snow White Junpaku - legit?

Hello fellow sharpeners, recently, the Naniwa Snow White Junpaku 8000 grit stone became available in my country (from a reputable dealer). Since I had heard so much about this stone over the years, I pulled the trigger and ordered it. This well-known (and quite expensive) stone is – as far as I...

Shapton Pro 1500: First impressions/comparison with pics

That's great information for all who interested in the Pro 1.5k, thanks for sharing it! Interesting about the porosity, porosity and drying time. I wish it was more similar to the 2k in this regard. Could one of you guys that have the stone maybe compare the tactile feel / hand feel of this...

    New 1k stone

I'd be curious about your thought on the SP1500 compared to the SP1k/2k and the NP800. Would be great if you could share your impressions with us! Especially how the SP 1500 works with average stainless kitchen knives.

    Nanohone NL-5

I was surprised and a little disappointed when I read that Cerax stones are on the "no list". They are certainly not the hardest stones out there, and also don't have diamonds as abrasives, so I didn't really understand this. Does anyone know why? Otherwise I might ask Nano Hone directly.

testing abrasion rate (testing stone speed)

Thanks Inferno, this is really great! As Deadboxhero said, pressure will be an important variable, especially if you do the testing all in sequence (and might get tired at the end...). But still, really cool and helpful data. And it underlines what many of us have discovered: conditioning of...

Keep us posted about the longevity of this plate...! Is it difficult to round the edges with this plate?

    Looking for coarse stone recs...

Hi OP, my favorite hard-wearing medium coarse stone is the Shapton Glass 500 double thickness. I like it the most from all the the Glass stones I have tested: fast, works with all kinds of steels, doesn't load, good feedback, splash&go, hard-wearing and still feels good while sharpening on it...

    One stone?

Hi Michi, tough choice. Since Inferno started the original thread in March 2020, I have been thinking about this (no, not constantly...). And I still can't decide. I guess my answer depends on the day you ask me and on whether a strop or stropping on something other than the stone is allowed...

A mad idea? Reducing my stone collection in 2021.

Thanks for sharing! You are right, sometimes when you go back to a stone after a while, you can really re-discovered it. And learn new aspects about it, maybe appreciating it much more than initially thought. I might have a lot of re-discovering to do, when I go back to my box in the basement. :)

A mad idea? Reducing my stone collection in 2021.

Thanks for you replies so far! @inferno: Why splash & go and soakers? Good question. Maybe that was my excuse to reduce to 5 stones and not to 3... I tend to use soakers with my carbon steel knives, and splash & go stones with stainless knives. I think it was you who recommended the SG 500 & 3k...
