Is this a bad knife to buy?

For $45 I wouldn't hesitate a moment. We're talking new, unused item here right?

Show us your sticks (finished handle projects)...

Thanks! Even with the little experience that I have working on knife handles I'm pretty sure that's correct. This was a practice run before I tackle an older Tojiro of similar style handle.

Just a quick partial tang Western to replace an ugly plastic handle on a pretty decent budget category small three piece bunka. My first handle on this tang type.

What’s the point of a point (on a longer blade)

I have a point on my 240mm all rounder gyuto and my 325mm unnecessarily long behemoth of a gyuto is round tip (can still core a tomato though!).

    Help with Knife identification

That's why I search with kanji if I've managed to recognize them. The hits don't necessarily come from shops but if they're mentioned somewhere that's at least something.

    Help with Knife identification

True. However, I've come across several knives that look like they have been around for 10 years max and still found nothing about them.

    Help with Knife identification

There are so many blacksmiths, sharpeners and (small) shops out there and any of those could be the one branding the knife. I got several knives that are either too difficult to read because of the stylized kanji or there's just no mention of them at all over the entire Internet. They usually...

    Another knife ID dead end

Searching Kunishige gives some hits so definitely plausible. Thanks!

    Another knife ID dead end

Hi all, Got my hands on this nice little tip chipped suminagashi bunka. I'm quite sure I've deciphered 3/4 to be 貞 之 ? 重. I'm quite sure the first two are correct and mayhaps the fourth one as well, but the third one is giving me a headache. I tried several searches with the partial ID but...

Knife identification given by my in-laws

The first picture is a sure thing for Sakai Ichimonji.

    Worth restoring?

The single bevels look a bit factory edge-ish, so I'd probably first check the kirehas with a quick polish run to see how they are and then resharpen starting with coarse to level them. If they're double bevel, forget what I just said 🤭

    Help with Knife identification

I did some reverse engineering on the middle one and my call is 双月 (translator gives Soutsuki as a name). I'm not gonna testify in court, but I'm fairly confident the radical on the right (又) in that middle character is what you need to search by to find the rest.

The never ending question...one stone ?

Good point. It's just pretty much the only thing I've managed to get the job done with. The 120 seems to get glazed from just working on single bevels though. I've circumnavigated the issue by dressing frequently. If there's a killer way of maintaining the 120 any tip is welcome!

The never ending question...one stone ?

Shapton Kuromaku 1k. And when you want to get into polishing, add Kuromaku 5k. For bad chips and other heavy duty reprofiling, Kuromaku 120 (you're gonna want some proper lapping equipment like Atoma 140 or the Suehiro Dada with that though). The Kuromaku series stones last pretty much forever...

    Used Yanagi sharpening advice

To me it looks straight all the way. The kireha runs a bit thinner towards the edge at the heel which is fairly common (regular find for me on debas and yanagibas).

    Used Yanagi sharpening advice

The ura looks ok. The worst thing after an ura that looks like post nuclear disaster is an axe instead of a proper koba. Your edge looks pretty nice but you might wanna bring the tip to match the rest. Just leave the heel as it is and catch up over time. You could mayhaps clean the heel a little...

Daily Knife Pics. Any Knife. Join In!

Found this just in front of my front door under shifting sands moments ago. Had taken apart the deck in front before summer and it took quite a few months for this to surface. I don't know if this was used as a box cutter or mushroom knife or how long it's been down there (been living here since...

    First attempts at rehandling (Western)

Thank you so much! Highly appreciated as all of my experience so far is basically in this thread :D Today I started a bigger project rehandling some vintage-ish knives I've hand picked to restore as a wedding gift for a friend. I need the practice so I don't botch that job! I hope he doesn't...

    First attempts at rehandling (Western)

This time I took a crack at a partial tang rehandle. The old handle had split quite cleanly lengthwise so I glued that back together and tweaked it a little to make it removable. The tang is roughly half length but full height so it was fairly simple to go for a one piece design with the new...

    Deba maker I.D. help.

The steel being blue 2 I'm guessing well worth over $32. Nice looking piece.
