Hello All,

I've been sitting on this blade far too long. It's been more or less finished now since late December, and the time has come for this blade to find a home. Given the nature of honyaki and their greater value I think it's best to give the future owner some creative liberty with the handle material selection and a few of the other aesthetic details, so I'm offering this blade as a semi custom. Attached are pictures of my currently available handle material (block #370 and the grey pink block have been taken).

This edge has a flat approximately 9cm long starting at the heel, and the blade itself has one of the most active hamons I have ever made. The depth and movement of the pattern is remarkable. Pictures just don't do it justice so I've included a video. Hamons are too fluid to fully appreciate in a still shot. If you look carefully you'll see small little lines covering the surface that look like tiny scratches, those are the banding present in the steel, and this steel develops a great deal of it in use.

The grind has very little taper in the first half of the blade, less grinding post HT on honyaki means more activity is retained, and I think overall this blade is best characterized as a light mid-weight or heavy laser.

  • Blade: 246mmx55mm SheffCut (a 26c3 derivative) at around 64-65 hrc. 2500 grit finish, etched and polished to reveal the depth of the hamon
  • Neck: 17mmx??
  • Handle:?
  • POB: ?
  • Spine: 3.0mm 20mm back from the choil, 2.55mm at halfway, .74mm 1cm from the tip
  • Grind: flat to convex RH bias
  • Weight: ?
  • Relieved choil and spine
  • Edge: .23mm @2mm, .52mm@5mm, .87mm@10mm from the edge, measured at the midpoint,
For the blade itself I'm asking $500 U.S shipped with insurance anywhere in North America, (for shipping to Europe or Australia I will cover the first $25 U.S of shipping) $515 with an installed burned oak handle, ~$540-560 for a stabilized/exotic wood handle, +$80 for a pressed and stippled brass end piece. As always, if this blade is purchased in conjunction with another I will happily deduct $25 off of the price of the other blade.

Just this morning I completed the HT on 4 other honyaki, 2x 270mm suji in 26c3, and 2x 180mm gyuto in SheffCut. I'll be plugging away at those slowly over the next few weeks.

Thanks for having a look!

-Matt

Following up on this guy. I don't have pics handy (there hasn't been much patina development to speak of anyway), but I'm loving this knife. Took it for a daily drive for about a week and it handled absolutely everything well. Thanks again, Matt!

Is this the one that got the blue/pink handle?
