This is some seriously good stuff. A very well forged white steel 1 cutting layer hardened to about 66HRC. The finish of say Kunikei or Kiyohisa is finer but I've never really cared about that. It's good enough for me. The most important bits are in order, a flat back, a well formed ura and it's aligned the right way. When I lay it down the entire back makes contact with the wood, as it should.

You are correct, it's a paring chisel known as an usu-nomi in Japan. The increased length makes it easy to keep it in line with the work piece and offers more control.

I don't know the name of the blacksmith, I was told he wants to keep it a secret. But the shop that sells it is called jindaiko-honpo.
