Happy new year KKF,

Hope everyone is enjoying their holidays.

I'm looking for some help from everyone here please.

Despite my urging, a friend is set on buying s knife set with a block.

Was wondering what you all find as acceptable quality?

I'm assuming he wants non reactive for his family to use (and abuse lol).

Let's say $800 or under.

You probably have already tried convincing them to get a block and buy some decent knives for it that are tailored to their actual use cases. They'd still have a block full of knives in the end ;)

What's their budget?

This one looks nice - probably out of budget though :D

I'd recommend to people to buy something like this with a block:

Somewhere someone must have stacked a few decend J-Knives with a block lol. Should be interesting what comes up here.

Now that I have a few minutes, let me circle back to my recommendation...

I believe the Gourmet series was one of the best value lines you could get. The prices have risen on them so maybe that classification falters some but I still think they're worth a strong consideration.

They're light but not wispy, no finger guard, tough steel and handle, and just an all around solid knife. I thinned my 8" chef and it performs very well. But, even without, for non-knife folk, it is a real nice option. I never found myself caring about the difference between 56 and the higher priced 58 offerings and I seriously doubt non-knife geeks will ever have a clue.

I have a 6" chef from this line tucked away for my granddaughter.

I'd recommend something from Messermeister or Zwilling (I'm a fan of the pro line).

Yeah they aint cheap at msrp...when I was into them, I was able to find them on clearance/ebay for around 50% off very easily. Never bought a whole block tho

Funny enough... my parents and brother use zwilling/kramer sg2 which is the same as the miyabi, no chips after many years, and definitely abused.

But yeah, Wusthoff probably better option.

Don’t worry, @ch_br can sharpen out all the chips for them. 👍🏼

Oh lord...

I actually went back to the house yesterday and one freshly sharpened knife was in a literal pile of silverware in then sink a foot tall. 🤕

The other...

In the fookin dishwasher 🤣🤣

RIP to my nice new edges

🤦‍♂️🙏🔪🙏

I quite like the Ikea Reträtt knife block. It's one of the few that actually fits longer knives (I've fit 27 suji in there, and everything 240-250 is no problem), it fits multiple tall knives....and best of all it doesn't come with junk knives so you can just fill it with good ones.
