Lookin’ for a budget plastic cutting board to gift to my aunt. I also grabbed her a Takamura Chromax santoku. Any suggestions?

Yah mostly because I know if I get something wooden, it won’t be maintained, plus it might be heavy.

Something sub 50
Even plastic can be heavy, especially if its the durable kind. I'd check those discount stores like Ross or TJ Maxx. Should be able to find a hard 11x17 or so for around $10. I actually keep a few around the house cuz they're convenient.

The oxo good grips are decent and have rubber feet so they don't slide around a ton
Note that the OXO ones have a groove around the perimeter. If (like me) that is something you don't like, it might be better to look for something else.

I use plain HDPE cutting boards for things like meat and fish. To stop them from sliding, I put a piece of anti-slip mat underneath. Both are cheap and effective.

I've gifted these before and because most people don't/can't be bothered to secure their cutting boards they love them. I don't dig the juice groove either but having built in anti-slip is huge for your average home cook

I agree. A cutting board that doesn't slide around is great. But, for me, the juice groove is enough of a deterrent to put up with the anti-slip mat.

Epicurean makes a variety of board sizes, not too bad on edges, lightweight, go right into dishwasher. When I'm gifting a board to a non-knifenut, I like to go with these.

Ppl here don't care for Shun, but for lightweight hinoki boards, I love em. They have like a half off sale a couple times a year. Full price is not worth.

Sorry everyone, but @tostadas won this thread. Particularly if you get them to custom inscribe something like:

Have you noticed she’s always hanging around with handsome young men and calling them “nephew”

That one won’t go in the dishwasher.

Both sides of the OXO can be used. There are rubber feet for both sides. The back doesn’t have the groove.

In the under $50 plastic space, I think OXO is best.

My only complaint is the flex, which makes the smacking of garlic a less than ideal experience, but even so I find myself reaching for the Oxo plastic whenever I have drippy meats. I think I need to man up and cream my wood after oiling. Then I can really go to town.

What do you consider ‘budget.’ I like Sani-Tuff for cheap synth cutting board.

The thin tenryo black PE boards at mtc kitchen are very nice. I prefer it over my two hasagawa boards. Only issue is it warps under hot tapwater unless you wash both sides. If it warps, just put hot tapwater on the other side. I find the size fine for typical smallish home tasks. Korin may have them in different sizes.
