Bottom line, when you use lighting,,,, you have to know why,,,,,, and how,,,,, you intend to use it. It's not merely illuminating an object,,,, but rather, placing the effects of that lighting where it enhances the subject, and/or gaining a benefit..
Photographing something has two essential elements, light,,,, and time. You may not need lighting at all,,,if,,,,,,, you can select a longer shutter speed,,,,, AND keep the camera steady enough for the duration of that open shutter. Placing lighting to give precisely located reflections,,, such as you may want for highlighting the bevel of a knife for example,,,is a separate issue.
