For sale is a rare Maruoyama Shiro Suita stone, known for its exceptional quality.
These stones are becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in such a clean and desirable size.

This is your archetypical Maruoyama Shiro Suita!
Effortless Kasumi. Nice and soft, without being too soft. Great details when used with water only.

Measurements: 74 x 182 x 27 mm
Weight: 868g

Price: *430€*.

(EU is typically 10-15€. US about 40-50USD.)

(pardon any white balance issues in the videos)

The stamps on the side of the stone indicate the following:

白(Shiro) 巣板 (Suita) 巣なし (Sunashi)

The remaining letters confirm its authenticity and indicate that it is a "first/premium quality" stone.

This particular Shiro Suita Sunashi stone has a beautiful white-grey appearance. It is free from any noticeable flaws or lines that would affect the sharpening experience. The finely chiseled kawa skin on the backside reveals hints of Aka and Kuro-Renge, which are not easily visible on the flat face.

The stone behaves exactly as you would expect from a Maruoyama Shiro Suita.
It has a medium softness and, when pressure is applied, it generates a nice and medium-fine slurry easily.

When used with slurry, it creates an excellent contrast and a hazy finish on the hagane.
It produces no noticeable scratches, making it relatively fine for a Maruoyama stone.

With ample water and reduced pressure, especially after smoothing the surface with a fine Atoma or Nagura, it will begin to burnish out intricate details and brighten the core, resulting in a beautiful reflective finish with a strong contrast.

As a collector of Maruoyama stones, I'm always interested in trying new ones. Therefore, I'm parting with this stone (while keeping my smaller Shiro Type 80).

Video of stone in action. Started out with Shapton GS2k, took less than 4 minutes to finish from there:

Video of results (no oil, stone used with slurry. More details and brighter polish can be achieved with just water)

Thanks for asking, the sunashi feels nicer, I’d say, but speed and hardness wise I’d put it right in the middle of the expected range.

My Ao Suita is much harder, by comparison

Is this stone a 'fast cutter'? I'm looking for a stone that can bridge between a medium synthetic and harder naturals, but can finish on it's own for an usuba with a slight toothiness. I was under the impression that the su in a suita is what produces their markedly fast cutting power, so I am unsure what to expect from a Maruoyama suita, let alone sunashi.

It is an absolutely fast cutter. I have used it to bridge the gap between Shapton Glass 2k and finish (or finished directly on the Maruoyama).
The lack of Su does NOT make it slower.

However, the stone is SPF for now
