The selection is huge. Many complaints like it leaks all over the place, broke after 5 uses or a few months, cooks too slow, had a great one for 20 years and this one sucks... Even for name brand units. What to do? Small to medium size, one or maybe two tiers. Any suggestions from good experience for $40 ish units?

What's the benefit of having a seperate appliance for it compared to the usual steamer inserts you can throw on pans?

Available for about $5 in any Asian market.

just do not forget the baking paper insterts.

A steam oven is also nice, especially for larger amounts

I'm quite happy with the cheap metal inserts if you have a pot that matches one. Quite convenient... never really felt like I needed anything fancier than that, but admittedly I never really do larger volumes.

zero doubt. a TaTung steamer. my MIL gave me hers when she moved to Taiwan. i friggen love the thing. the auto shutoff is awesome. it does a lot, and has multiple lids and baskets. i bet i can make mexican tamales in it.
