I bought couple MB used on Ebay 20-25 years ago. The black resin with gold accents paid 90.00$ looked good with micro scratches only seen with magnification. Used it the most at work ordering from storeroom. Writing recipes. Also the Burgundy resin. The Sterling Silver top black resin bottom paid around 140$. These are all authentic MB.

Last year checked out MB on ebay saw some great deals too good to be true. All are sold as authentic by sellers. I bought one for 80.00 a rollerball pen. Seller from Greece. It looked good but resin was plastic action was different. It came with box & MB manual.
I contacted ebay saying fake got my money back & seller claimed didn't know & let me keep the pen. I bought another one because liked the silver with rose gold accents. 60.00 I suspected it was fake similar box. It was also high level fake with serial # on band and Germany written on lower band. These replicas are getting better. I kept it because liked the look. Use real MB bold BP refills cross off my shopping list at Costco.

I have done research on line how to tell fake MB. I can say with certainty that a majority of MB ballpoint & rollerball pens sold on ebay now are fakes. In bidding many go over 100.00 this year anyway. Reviews sellers i know fakes say good seller great deal on like new MB. I'm sure most don't even know they are buying fakes. Most all reviews are good except one person saying fake MB stay away.

This goes against ebay counterfeit policy
It makes me wonder.

Fake MB

Mention too that folks selling vintage MB
For say 200-300 if I message them most always reply. The dozen or so I know selling Fakes, message is this a Replica MB none of them ever reply.

A friend of mine who is a serious watch collector tells me that something like 80% of all Rolex watches sold are fakes. Some of the fakes are so well done now that even experts have a hard time telling them apart from the genuine thing.

Which begs the question: if a fake is so good that it can't be distinguished from the original anymore, what's the point of buying the original at many times the price? Especially when the watch itself as far as the quality of its movement and its accuracy are concerned is not anything to get excited about to begin with?

It seems fake MB comes in more models now compared to a few years ago, but still not for the fountain pens with piston filler. These had been sold in China for years, as they are mostly bought as gifts by people who don't know much, and fortunately they are very easy to tell from pictures with some research done.

The thing with Montblanc's is the materials made of they last practicaly forever. It's like my sterling silver top black resin bottom. The silver gets tarnished after time, little silver polish polishes up like new. The fakes look good but materials are cheap. Plastic, thin lower quality coatings don't hold up over time. Also fit & finish close inspection is not as good. They put effort in making them look like MB.

I saw a gold pen that last year would bid up to 40.00. Today saw bidding shoot to
179.00 for crappy coating mix.

One of best sellers has vintage MB some lightly even not used at all in box 30 years old. 235.00 for black resin 18K gold plate accents.

Like everything used MB have gone up in price, I was really surprised to see all the fakes & how many there are these days.

Makes me think that ebay is not that serious on sellers selling them. You can get your money back if you complain tho.

Always wanted a gold Montblanc. 90% gold MB on ebay are fakes.

They are auctioned sometimes bids get high on a 15.00 pen. Seen them go over 100.00 all the time.

Found this authentic gold MB. It has some surface blemish. The rollerball ink was old didn't write at all. Had new rollerball refill writes perfect. It was only pen she was selling plenty other stuff. I mentioned very small dent could see offered her fare amount less got it for⁷ 110.00. It is heavy at very least 14K maybe 18K. This pen is pre 1990 because thats when started putting serial # on clip band. Of coarse most of the fakes now have serial #. Most reviews are positive saying pen looks new. They are new made in China.

I’d rather pay for the work of some grumpy old Swiss bachelors than that of their Chinese equivalents.
Provenance is a prime component of value.
It's astonishing to me that luxury brands would not be much more aggressive about policing fakes on such an easy target as eBay.
I concur. The value of a premium brand is as much reputation as craft.

For me I want competent Chinese watch makers to make their own brand, they have the skill. Making counterfeits, even high quality ones is a disservice to their own reputation

Well said; I agree entirely.

TBH tho “I’d rather pay for the work of some grumpy old Swiss bachelors than that of their Chinese equivalents.” sounds bit weird to me but I agree with your sentiment that if I want to buy something it got be authentic, not as good as which I always regret later

I expressed myself clumsily, suggesting a whiff of racism that was neither intended nor something I’d defend. What you said far better expresses my core sentiment.

Fake MB pens for both ballpoint & Rollerball take MB refills. These are the most replica type pens. Fountain pens are even faked these days, but less so because more expensive to make. Still a German MB side by side anybody with half a brain can see the difference with fit & finish. More important quality of materials. I have 4 german MB all used 3 show no wear damage unless with magnifier. The gold one has little dimples that's why thought had more gold in it gold is soft & heavy. Found pen I bought on line exact vintage gold it is 14K. Most jewelery 14K is mixed with nickel & silver to make it more scratch resistant. Like wedding rings.

Two pens I found were pretty expensive way more than what I paid. One old gold pen exact same model of mine over 1K.

My 4 german pens 3 bought 15-20 years ago. Still look good. Gold bought last week.

Two fakes the black rollerball got my money back. Seller didn't even want the pen returned told me I could keep it.

The Silver with gold accents bought cuz liked the look. Picture beginning of this thread & now taking to store couple times & store it with other non premium pens except my black resin real MB that I use all the time. Fake the crappy thin plating is already damaged on the gold clip.
