Asking $390, USA preferred, CONUS insured shipping included. Used for a few test cuts in 1 sweet potato, still on original edge, not sharpened or stropped, no patina.
Length: 250mm
Steel: 26c3, “spicy white”
Spine: 3.3mm at ferrule, 3.1 at choil, 2.6 midway, 2.0 at last hammer mark, 1.1 approx 1” from tip
Weight: 211g
Handle: tapered Rokkaku Hanmaru (octagonal, rounded)
My usual excessively wordy description and pics follow below.
This is v1.1 of the Frederick Spare MCX from Modern cooking, or the 2nd batch of the 1st release. v1.1 has more pronounced tsuchime and ku than v1.0, along with a slightly longer neck. V2.0 (due to be released next week) is a mild k-tip design with a lower and more visible hamon. The choil treatment on this v1.1 is the curviest - it got the Sofia Vergara treatment, while v1.0 is more Emma Stone, and v2.0 is Courtney Cox. IMHO this v1.1 is the best looking (but of course I’d say that).
Turns out a 250mm is just too big for me, but I was impressed enough with it to get on Spare’s list for a custom bunka so I’m essentially swapping this guy for one of his bunkas. As an fyi the knife shipped kamon-style with only a heavy paper saya and shrink-wrapped, no vci paper or knife box.
Overall a ton of knife for the money. Seriously, a honyaki from an established Western smith with impeccable f&f for under $800? Who does that?
