I've benefited from reading these forums over the last few months, and it's time for me to join up, since I've read enough to be full of questions.

I'm a wood and metal worker by nature, but I've fallen into the sharpening world with no regrets. I'm just learning to sharpen knives, and since i sharpen my chisels as little as possible, Im relatively inconsistent there as well.

I don't have any professional stones yet, but ive experimented with generic oilstones, a norton oil stone (india, i think. the one with the tiger on the box), that cheap four-sided diamond plate thing from harbor freight, and a two sided import diamond plate (the twenty four dollar one). Ive also sharpened haphazardly on sandpaper quite a bit.

I've watched hours of youtube on sharpening and sharpening stones, and I'm interested in all aspects, especially the technical ones.

Also, I look forward to finding out what "feedback" means (finally!)

Welcome to the forums.

Feedback is the information that the stone gives you about the edge. This is often a change in feel (tactile feedback) or sound (aural feedback) or both when you reach the edge or have abraded the burr.

Welcome aboard!

This is a cool place 😎 Waaaaay different vibe from Reddit or YouTube videos. I've found that people here are, for the most part, both more open-minded and critical and I think both of these are great when balanced. Fwiw, I think those Norton stones are fantastic and diamond plates also have their place, even the cheap ones. Welcome in!

If you really wanna experience great feedback, it's hard to go past a Chosera/ Naniwa Pro.
I guess the only way to understand it is to experience it myself. The Chosera 3000 especially seems to have a great reputation and its one of the ones at the top of my list. I'm curious about the shapton kuromaku as well, which I gather is a good value.

I love the Naniwa Pros, not so much the Shapton Pros, but have not used them all, fwiw. Naniwa Pro 400 is a real standout in the world of synthetic stones.

Chosera 1k and 800 are pretty great. 400 not bad either.

400 then deburr on 800 or 1k is a pretty good progression for Western stainless.

Welcome.

Being a woodworker, I'd recommend giving Shapton Glass stones serious consideration. Not the best for feedback but excellent stones and also used by a lot of woodworkers. Keep in mind, "feedback" is often associated with soaking stones. I prefer splash and go.
