Hate to do this.....but I had some custom blades that are finally finished and I need to come up with some cash so it is time to part ways with a few of my best knives. First up is my prized Hattori KD 240 gyuto. This knife is basically brand new, but it has been used a few times to cut up some veggies just to try it out at home. Has never been sharpened. There is a very light small scuff on the face of the blade near the cutting edge and tip, you have to turn it just right in the light to see it and I tried to photograph it below. Not a big deal, but at this price point I want to make sure it is mentioned. These are pretty much impossible to find these days so get it while you can. Asking $2500 shipped conUS only, pay by Paypal.

Wow.

Given what you've just put up for sale, I hope you'll share what the proceeds are funding!

damn just bought some custom knife!!!! Should keep the fund for this.

Wow. Never would I thought that a 240mm kd gyuto would show up anywhere for sale.

Honestly i think toi should chance this and ask one or your customs to wait a few months for payment pretty please. Its probably the ultimate unicorn that i have extrême doubts that what your getting would surpasse this. maybe a damascus kramer, burke or lisch but even that id doubt would have the lust this knife attracts. Id probably cry if i owned this and had to sell it.

I hear you, believe me! This was my unicorn for many many years. In fact, it was my very first unicorn....and I swore I would NEVER EVER sell it!! Now you have me second guessing my decision....

Thanks guys. Picked up a couple of Burkes so that is what the money is going towards. They are already paid for, but I try to sell a few knives whenever I buy new ones. I already have waaaay more knives than I really need. Still, may have to pull this one if it is not snatched up very soon....

I am with Godslayer on this one. This not something I would ever expect to see and definitely not for sale. It's in unicorn status plus one because these will never be made again by Hattori. They were made in such a unique way I doubt they will be reproduced and I feel like these knives were the pinnacle of his kitchen cutlery before age and health problems forced him out of production. Maybe I am being a tool by applying his life story to this KD but he did make kitchen cutlery towards the end of his career most of his work was in hunting blades.

History is listed here and it's kind of cool

Holy crap i didnt know he was at that level KD-104 is easily top tier master smith level. Im honestly blown away, Ive never seen such complex damascus from a japanese maker. Really amazing stuff and thanks for the link. But as noted this is the peak and i agree a burke might be worth a trade but its a hell of a lot easier to get a burke than to get a hattori kd. Its the peak of japanese knives made using the best materials of the time, combined with a lifetime of experience of a master craftsman.

Truly a unicorn. Though I can't justify the price but whoever is buying that is sure going to be very happy.

Thank goodness! I was scrambling for available funds...it would have been worth the tax raping to take it out of my 401k!! Beautiful knife!!

I know nothing about Hattori KD knives other than them being impossible to get, but I see them get mentioned quite often as a unicorn knife.

I figure this is as good a place as any to ask. What makes them so special? Grind? Steel? Heat treat? Famous smith? Lore? All of the above?

Someone please enlighten me.

Both the steel and Smith are retired. But everything you mentioned plays a role

Gary I'm surprised you didn't buy this one. Do you already have a 240mm KD?
