Hello there kkf'ers!
looong time lurker first time joiner here.
Learned so much from you sweet people here. Mostly into rubbing steel on rocks but one day I'll be buying me a fancy wrought clad gyuto to fawn over.

The reason why I joined today is that I got my youngest brother a nakiri. The whole family chipped in and I bought an A2 one for 130e including taxes. And let's say it's very rustic. Can't post pictures yet but I'm unsure if I should return it
Where on your nakirs does the cutting edge start? Like from the "tip"...
In this iteration it starts like 10mm after the curve of the "tip" hast joined the flat/belly of the blade.

Maybe I should cheese the system ab bit to get my 5 posts in.

However looking forward to profit from your kindness and experience:)
Ben

Welcome. Where did you buy it? Brand/maker?
Hi and thanks I feel welcome already.
If you google

Kawatsu Hamono Kurouchi Nakiri 165mm Aogami #2

It should pop right up.
In the description "wa sensibilities " are mentioned. Maybe I should have read it as wabi-sabi?

Welcome aboard, Ben!

Retailer?
Hi and all aboard the irresponsible financial decisions train:)

It's from knife japan and I really don't want to **** on Michael. He was very friendly, quick and the packaging was perfect. He even put up with my weirdly exited emails.

Post the pic. I'll work the bot.
Thanks Dave. I'll give it a try.

This would be the culprit:

Two two pics from the front:
Note how it could also stand in as saw with that jucy burr.

Otherwise the knife looks fine.
Do you think the wood of the handle lends itself to be burned for the esthetics?

Yay my first post with pics!

The grind is, let's say, unfinished. My Morihei TF Nakiri is sharp along the entire length of the blade road. A sharpening session starting on a low grit stone should help improve things

Let's be honest I probably won't return it. The birthday is next week an I've thinned/messed up a couple of knives over the last few years. So I'm half confident that the result might be decent. So the question would be where on the tip should the cutting edge start? I'd say at the 4. What do you guys think?

This is where the edge starts on my Nakiri. Being able to use the 'tip' is quite important.

Yeah. My only worry is that the blade might be too fat at the tip...
Would you start with a shapton pro 220 or a glass 500? I Also have the pro 120.

120? Are you sure? As you want to even out the blade road along its entire length, the good, thin part will be concerned as well. I wouldn't like a 120 any close to an edge.

Yeah. Good point. Was just thinking that I'm happy not to have taken the 120... started with the 500 and then switched to the 220.
My approach for the first hour so far has been to focus on the tip, trying to not push the shinogi too far up and keeping convexity. I'm thinking to later blend the tip with the rest of the blade road when I give it a polish.
Might this be foolish?

No, but I would have stayed with the 500, and make sure to create an edge in line with the existing one.

Ah I see. That is a very good point!
I don't want to create a belly where there wasn't one, do I? I guess I'm good for now since there isn't even a burr forming on the bevel road where it meets the tip yet. But I guess I should start working the entire blade as soon as that happens?

I would make let's say one stroke out ten to involve the entire length. Just to make sure the edge will be line.

Polish I said, forgetting about the inevitable low/high spots I did.

This is where I decided to give up:

But wait let's check the profile first!

That's a bit much isn't it? 🥲

hello there,

I'm super late with this but just wanted to say thanks to all who chimed in and offered some sage advice. I managed to get a result I was ok with and my brother is super happy about his gift. He calls it a laser although it's rather chunky, which I find quite endearing:)

As a closing note: I mentioned the issues to Michael and he gave me a super generous refund. What a great vendor, he'll have my humble business again.

See you all at the sharpening station!
