Welcome. So which high-end Japanese knife was it that sent you down the rabbit hole?
 
I do not know the Yaxell stones, but the sharpening on the first stone in a progression is crucial for the end result.
If they are Japan-made, they are likely to come from one of the very few great manufacturers. Just saw some Yaxell stones on Amazon US that were evidently made by Cerax/Suehiro.
