Hello, I am new to the knife world but having done heaps of research, I am slowly growing to become a knife nerd and am sure I will learn a lot from these forums. Being an aspiring chef, I haven't got a big budget and have been recently looking into vintage Japanese knives.

I recently come across this vintage deba and was wondering if anyone can tell me if its worth $50? The previous owner claims to have owned it for 12 years and because I can't read japanese, I am unsure if its a decent blade or just a touristy souvenir that someone has bought. If anyone could advice me on this it would be incredibly helpful.

Welcome.

Your question will get more "views" in the kitchen knife subforum. Any closeups of kanji on the blade will be helpful, as will a length measurement (mm), and weight (gr) if you have a scale avail. Relative to your hand it looks like 120mm or smaller - very limited utility. A rule of thumb I use is "if you don't know you need a single bevel, you probably don't need a single bevel".

Hi m8.

That's a ko-deba of some sort. Like daveb said: Limited appeal.

I'd probably trade a few stubbies for it, not a slab.

Btw, the kanji read: Minamoto tame-hisa or something...

Welcome.
