Hey I’m Sas and I have been in the chefknives discord for a few months now and I read this super interesting thread about the Kippington grind that I would love to try, but since I am broke I want to register for the pass around so therefore I am registering here :)
When I get financially more stable I would like to contribute to the forum but for now I won’t, I hope that’s ok.

You’ll find out that the main barrier to entry for a kippington, regardless of your budget, is never your budget lol.

I’d recommend to any new person out for a specific, hard to get knife… change your settings on here so you get notification emails for every BST post. Then change your settings on your phone so that those emails are flagged as important and you get push notifications for them. Then all you have to do is obsessively check your phone for the next 2-12 months and BOOM maybe you’ll have a kippington 😅

But i see I don’t have the privilege to reply, is that because I am not a supporting member?

Hey there,

I might suggest a different route than a pass around as I’m not sure there’s one for kippington right now.

Start getting to know a few people on the boards and pick their brains about different knives.

Get a little bit of history here and you’ll find that you can get your hands on just about any knife you’ve ever dreamed of if you know the right people.

It’s also worth noting that trying a kippington right out of the gates doesn’t give you much to compare it to. It’s kinda like getting a BMW as your first car at 16 rather than at 35-40 after driving clunkers and mid-range cars before that.

Bonus of the whole process is that you’ll get to meet some really cool people and become apart of a nice community.

Just my $0.02

I agree with the sentiment, however… everyone has used a knife before. Multiple crappy knives, probably, but they’ve used knives. Whether this person has a knife collection or not, they are not buying a bmw for their first car. You could say that maybe they’ve had perhaps a Corolla and an Altima already, and now are going to a Lamborghini because of a learned interest in foreign or exotic cars. Sure, there’s the chance anyone could invest the money and realize it’s not worth it for the money, but cmon…. No way he uses a kipp and thinks it’s not worth the buy in. Nobody chooses to drive a Corolla if they can afford a lambo, unless the lambo is in the garage and only for weekends.

So the real question you have to ask yourself is, are you ready to ruin yourself for all other knives for a while? Do you want to stuff that needle straight into your arm and become a full blown addict? Or would you rather have a little bit of this and a little bit of that, playing a dangerous game because deep down you know that inevitably one day you’ll end up with her…

All I’m saying is to remember the journey as much as the destination. Stop at the little pop towns and have greasy food at the local diner before you get to NYC

I gotcha, just differing opinions. I’m on one extreme side of the scale, you’re on the other side with the majority of sane people. One of the first 10 knives I ever bought was a $5k cleaver… I jumped in headfirst. Jammed that needle into my eyeball. I wouldn’t change it at all, and I’ve since bought many much cheaper knives and appreciated and loved them. I don’t think if I had bought that cleaver a year later, let’s say, that it would’ve improved my overall experience… I think there’s a strong argument that the better those first few knives are, the deeper the hooks get set in 🤷🏼‍♂️

The more addicts we can recruit to the dark side, the better for the community Nick. Get on board here 🤣

I was just very curious about the food release:) will just have my tsunehisa as migaki 210 gyuto, perhaps add a tak 180 in a few years, and then in 5 years see what hardent is doing :)
But passarounds just seem amazing opportunities to see what you like without having to be rich to buy knives to try them out :)
