I'm not sure if this kind of comment is against the rules (since we're only supposed to post supportive comments in BST), but if it came like that from your vendor you should 100% return that. I'm also not trying to disparage the knife in any way, just wanting to give an accurate picture from a user's standpoint.

Most chips aren't such a huge deal, but the placement, size, and shape of that chip will make katsuramuki very difficult. You'd also have to remove an awful lot of knife to get rid of that chip. Basically whoever buys it, if they want to use it, is looking at many long hours on a coarse stone. Any reputable vendor should honor a return like that.

Thanks for the info. I’ll try giving them a call, but the actual purchase was made quite a bit ago so I’m not too hopeful on that’s front.

Update: knife is getting sent in for repair. Wanna shoutout Oliver at Couteaux Japonais | Stay Sharp Mtl | Québec
For being helpful when he has no obligation; given I bought this knife 6 months ago. The Usuba is still up for sale, but it will be shipped after repairs.
Now that’s some customer service! Glad to hear it’s getting taken care of. GLWS!
