Just a newbie needing help.

I have a Norton Crystolon Combination Oilstone 1B45, no holder...just wrapped in a piece of flannel. I want to use it to sharpen some knives, scissors, and a throwing axe I ruined using other more sophisticated sharpeners, but don't know how to tell which is the top, do I do the bottom, and do I do the sides...and from what direction, etc. I'm so new I don't even know the right questions to ask. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure it's a Crystolon? "I" usually indicates an India. Crystolon are usually gray while India are orange but it can be hard to tell sometimes if they are well used.

Maybe take a couple pictures and start a new thread in the Sharpening sub-forum. The folks will sort it out.
