I've been a knife user and sharpener for over 7 decades. Now I do it for fun and some side change after building & selling a couple medical respiratory products companies where I designed and built the tools and injection molds for disposable plastics.
Sharpening in the machine shop environment means handling all sorts of carbides, so diamond wheels and diamond laps were the order of the day to get production done. I still use them today.
I'm guessing some blade makers also use diamond lap wheels & flat manual laps, which I still do to get fine edges. And, of course the diamond lapping compound lets me get a great polished surface. on those razor edges.
