Just got in a kamisori. The string wrap on the handle was quite stained. I tried cleaning it and the string dissolved away. Probably a good thing because the handle was very rusty underneath the string. Cleaning up the rust now, but I'd like to put a new wrap on it. Any advice on what to use and the best way to do it?

Just went with leather cord. Nice enough for now. Lacquer on the handle first to prevent future rust.

They hold water, and can lead to rust. Maybe bare is better?

I’ve never had good luck doing it, but @cotedupy has done some handsome examples I believe

Very kind of you to say ET, but actually I've only done one kamisori and it's nothing fancy in terms of wrapping. I kinda like it though:

Now that's very classy isn't it, good job! I might have to invest in some leather cord...

I like rattan, it adds a little more thickness. I use the small diameter stuff sold as chair caning, presoaked it becomes pliable.

This might be helpful to some. He's not wrapping a kamisori but it's done the same way. With wider material you just won't have as many wraps to cover the start or the whip finnish.

Many of them had built up handles to shape the handle before being wrapped, cardboard, paper, wood, glued to the sides and then wrapped.

Not in English, but here are a few ideas.

This is my Ohiri Kamisori. I didn't do the wrap, but figured the picture may help.
