Hi, all- we are planning a kitchen remodel and I’m wondering where to find information on appliances and other things. Are Houzz forums still a thing? Have people moved to Reddit? Where do you find your remodel information.

By the way any advice on a brand of a range hood? We can get a perfectly functioning Thermador hood for free, but we want something a little nicer that can also act as a attempt piece. The ventilation ducting will be a new build, so no preexisting constraints. Kitchen is small so only a 36 inch range will fit.

Thanks in advance!!

What is an "attempt piece?"

I think OP meant "accent piece." I'm sure there are ways that you make the free one a focal point. You could have your contractor wrap in in copper, or build a box around it and tile/paint the box. I'm sure more creative types that would have more ideas. You could always try Pinterest if you are looking for visual ideas.

There are some companies that make statement piece hoods. But there is a dizzying array of brands and options, so I'm looking for some crowd experience and guiding.

The aesthetic design doesn't really matter that much as long as there is a nice short path to outside. Pick whatever you want. What you pay more for is a powerful but quiet fan/motor.

Check out Proline range hoods. I’ve installed two in different houses and was pleased with the power and aesthetics and not too bad on price.

Not sure what aesthetic "style" your after, but yes - Vent-A-Hood is sort of the gold standard for "insert" hoods. An insert allows you to build a custom exterior around the hood - something that can't be done with your Thermador.

As Kgp says, check out Proline hoods out of Utah. They also sell inserts. Great Co. I've used 3 different models in three different custom builds (I build custom homes), and have a Proline in my own home. They're a great value. Have also used Vent-A-Hood, Thermador, Miele, Subzero/Wolf, etc., etc.

For appliances, a good blog is here:

Also, consumer reports is a good resource, but you need a subscription.

My remodel included a Wolf cooktop and a Viking hood because the Viking--at the time-offered 1800 cubic feet per minute clearance rate and the Wolf only 1500. Since I got the built-in infrared grill in the cooktop, the hood has been absoutely essential to keep the smoke alarm quiet. I like both units which have stood up to heavy use over almost 19 [not a typo!] years but I'm not sure those would be my choices now--the appliance market is volatile and far from transparent.
But my main recommendation is a Bosch oven. The thermostat is incredibly accurate--a Chef Alarm thermometer consistently shows oven temps within 10 degrees F. of the oven dial setting, far more reliable than any oven I've ever used.
