pretty easy. if the value JKI offers is worth it to you (and you want the knife), buy it. if you don't, then don't. there will always be cheaper vendors. some people shop at nordstrom, and some people shop at nordstrom rack. some people buy things from their local suppliers and some people shop around the world and try to find the cheapest possible option with or without local warranty. good to have different options.
This = correct ^

did any of you addicts get the Bidinger cleaver?

something complex or out of the ordinary?
Extremely simple - mono petty. couldn’t be simpler.

First he quoted me an amount I was happy with. Sounded good. Subsequently he said he misquoted me but he’d honour the price. Then he told me shipping could be over $100usd. Clearly that’s very high and sounds inflated (many of you have shipped packages to me from the USA to Sydney and it’s not even close to that even with express + insurance) … to me, that sounds suspiciously like he was either trying to make up the shortfall from the earlier misquote or to deter me from following through with the transaction (but I cannot confirm with certainty). I was ok to go ahead regardless (and frankly, I would have paid an increased price had he said ‘sorry, I misquoted you by accident, the actual price is $X’). In any case, I was happy to ride this out and if he balanced the scales through shipping, so be it. When I recently checked in, he said he’s not taking orders … this project is not going ahead.

Slightly frustrating but I have 6 knives en route to me and no burning desire for a shihan. Not happy with the interaction but not going to die in a ditch about the hypothetical petty.

Got it, I bought a xerxes a few months ago and I recall that shipping was pretty expensive even tho Janis went above and beyond trying to find shipping alternatives.

One thing to keep in mind is that shipping internationally is a hassle and quotes go all over the place depending on what service provider is used. I tried a few times to ship internationally and it's not worth it to me, hence, the reason I keep my sales CONUS only. FedEx quoted me like $100 to ship to norway, buyer told me that was too much and he has seen cheaper, I told the buyer ok I am not interested in selling it anymore (this was an expensive knife +1.5k).

Shipping prices can be all over the map depending on services and who you are dealing with.

My wife had a magazine shipped to her from the US and it cost $40CAD. I shipped a box back to the same person for $25CAD. With air service, I can't get off the continent for less that $100CAD (before insurance and taxes). But I know if you have a business contract it can cost less.

I’ve experienced the strangest fluctuations in shipping prices from users on this forum in the US, ranging from like $30 to $100 with no discernible difference in speed, carrier or insurance - it’s like UPS have a dartboard with a load of different shipping fees and lob a dart with each individual inquiry.

I understand that there is variation but I'm surprised that every other maker or KKF member who has shipped to me from the USA has been able to find shipping for $40-$60USD (for a gyuto). The SD is not that high. I don’t want to stir a controversy. It is what it is and I have happily acquired some mono petties that I am thrilled about thanks to some top end makers that I met through KKF!
