At least if you gamble you pull a lever, or choose your numbers, or open a pack of MLB cards etc. Buying a raffle ticket isn’t even gambling in that sense. Money blackhole.
It’s gambling lol. It’s like not calling trading options gambling even though you pick your numbers

You’ll always notice the hivemind on the forum unfortunately, while this may get me some flack….

I really disagree with the notion those blades should be increased in price. A belt finished knife with deep scratches leans into the practical realm, not “collector”. I know most people here are overly-nice but i do not agree that the craftsmanship on that blade should pull over $1000. He has things he can do to encroach on that number but I think theres some refining to be done, reminds me of how well Bidinger took off. Apex ultra also got a lot of people’s attention,
which I’m starting to view as not worth the upcharge. Most home cook’s dont even notice the difference it provides. At work, i can barely notice the difference. It’s not THAT special.

Theres also a “log” of knives for customs to be made, eventually everyone will have one. This is what makes the perceived value feel higher, fomo….

We are probably his biggest market and like Ive seen, interests come and go. I do hope this influx of popularity and good reviews help get his market even further.

I really like Apex Ultra - as a home cook. It stays sharp for a long time, and since everything I've got is monosteel, patinas really nice. I've abused mine and they've never rusted. Is it worth the upcharge? I like it over 52100, but I like Blue over White so I'd pay that upcharge as well. I think, possibly irrationally, that there maybe something to these steels that have tungsten in them.

I think one of the reason that AU has taken off is that it is pretty available. It's a bit like a western version of Aogami Super. AS is done by a few makers, but historically has never really been available in the west. Sure there are steels that are close (1.2519), but they also don't seem widely used.

Honestly, Eddie could sell at 1.2k anyway. It might just cause some bad blood raising prices that high that fast.
I am not disagreeing, but do you think some of the allure of Eddie is his relatively low output, relatively cheap price for westerns, and great performance? I feel like if Eddie and Maillet, JB, etc starting listing their knives at $800-900, the first few batches would probably sell out fairly quickly, but once people with the deep pockets got their fill, they have kinda priced out a huge part of their audience.

Edit:

To piggyback off of Enrico's reply. I agree with him and do believe that knives that encroach or past 1k should have that extra fit and finish that I feel like a lot of these makes purposely leave out to keep their knives reasonably priced for their audience. For example, Hardent's werkgericht line are amazing knives in the $400-$700ish range with amazing performance. And those are purposely made with that price range in mind. He has also released a knife on eating tools that was over $1k, so he clearly is capable of putting out knives at that price range too.

Sure, there's probably a maximum volume you can sell at really high prices unless you go the sort of ultra-custom route of Kamon or Xerxes, where every knife is very unique. But it's not like you're forced to stay at that price point either. Kamon sold 60 knives at a higher price point than Maillet does, so clearly once you've established yourself, you can find a larger audience at a cheaper price.

I fully understand where people are coming from regarding value, I'm not someone who doesn't flinch at price, and I've passed on lots of knives that felt a hundred dollars too expensive. I've yet to even break past the $600 mark.

But that said, Eddie has such hype going on right now that I think he's only putting money in the pockets of flippers rather than himself by keeping his prices low.

Tokushu has Manaka ENN on presale
Make sure you use kkf15 if you get one- prices are reasonable for what they are
Dumb question- I look at their site now and then to see what's new. Going to either new arrivals or all japanese knives and sorting by newest, this doesn't show up. Had to search for 'Manaka." How do you find their new listings?

They probably updated an old listing for this - so the product page has been up for a while, with new title and description. As a result it doesn't show up as "new".

Probably have to follow them on Insta or email to get the updates.

The hardest working retired dude I know
I think raising the price point cured the back problem…not that I’m being critical- good on him!
Why are you being so judgemental on what his retirement hobby is? Some likes to lawn bowl, or gardening, kato's retirement hobby just so happens to be knife making, ain't anything wrong with that.

I want Eddie to get as much as he can for his work, but the appeal at his current price is quite high. If he should raise his prices substantially, I think I’d be enticed to look at several other makers in the new price range. There are A LOT of excellent knives in the 700 dollar range that I’d try just to see if they are as nice.
