Knife Rec ~$150

Howdy!

I have been asked by a friend who is purchasing for their partner for a knife rec under $200. Almost zero specs or wants were stated, hence me not filling out the normal questionnaire. I buy above this price point so I don't have much experience in this range. Basically just asking for what you think the best offerings are in the $100-200 range so I can provide some options for them to choose from.

Any of the various AUS-8 offerings on JCK (Blue Clouds is a nice line) or Tsunehisa in Ginsan.

Really, really hard to give a rec though when the use case is so unknown. A Wusthof or Henkels may be the better choice here.

If you think they can handle carbon, the CarboNext series on JCK is also nice.

What do you think of a Misono of the appropriate laterality and steel type?

Misono UX10 24cm gyuto and 18cm santoku are both in that price range right now, both well reviewed in the normie press (ATC, NYT). The UX10 large carbides will also keep them going if their sharpening schedule falls behind. Otherwise I find Misono's heel height a bit too low (though I love my dragon suji).
