Need some advice on how to store my knives.

Just getting my first couple nice knives and don't really know what to do for storage. It looks like knife strips are really popular but I don't have space in the kitchen where I could put one (distance between counter tops and cabinets too small). Some other options I saw were in-draw storage but wasn't sure how that would work with taller knifes or if I eventually get a cleaver.

I would love to be able to display them but really just want a better way to store them than in the box they came in. Thanks!

A nice magnetic knife stand could be the solution here. There are all prices and sizes available. If you have a piece of counter space available or even on another piece of furniture to place it on 👍

I buy knife guards for knives that don't come with sayas and store them in a drawer. Keeps the edges safe but you have to be extra diligent with drying to make sure no moisture gets trapped. Can also lead to scratches if something abrasive gets caught in the guard but I personally haven't had too much trouble with it.

That could work as well. Would probably be cheaper and leave more counter space available. Thanks for the suggestion!

So my thought here was, if i'm getting nice knives... i need nice knife storage and went to etsy. Below two shops I've used to make custom knife blocks

"Mine"

I hate magnets... don't like to pull to grab a knife.
Wow! Really like the look of the knife block from the Jone’s shop. Did you request a custom piece (if so how.. I only see custom cutting boards)?

I'm not really a big fan of magnetic strips, but what if you mounted one (or two) vertically, so that the knives stored horizontally. Under cabinet height wouldn't be a problem. Here's an image from the Interwebs:

That’s a great idea. But I still don’t think I have space (only about 8-9in of clear space in the backsplash)

For magnetic stands, the Amazon ones work well, but most of them are best suited for knives up to 210mm. I added a strip of wood to mine to allow it to hold 240s without botttoming out the tip.

If I wasn’t able to have mag racks on the wall (and if you’ve got the budget), these look really nice

There’s also Piotr the Bear if you can find one available

Side question for folks: I've always thought about filling a box, in some way, vertically or horizontally. I like rice. Rice could work. Will rice scratch or otherwise hurt say a soft iron clad knife? A polished honyaki? Anyone have experience here?

I think Knifewear uses lentils in their display cases.

I only have 210mm knives for now, but would probably want to try larger in the future.

Tho products from Piotr the Bear look super nice but are a little expensive for me 😢

Yeah, Piotr is about as high end as it gets with knife blocks, and they are rarely in stock.

Here’s my Amazon special with the spacer

Post a photo of your kitchen. That'll give us a better idea of what we're working with.

This is the area area of the kitchen I would want to put something if end up going that direction. There is 10in of countertop before the cabinets start and the cabinets are 18in from the counter. Thanks!

If I can't fit anything over here, I'll probably try on of the in-draw methods mentioned earlier (saya, knife guard, cambro, etc.).

This has been my idea for my low space counter-cabinets space. Those suckers leave not much space between ‘em.

wooDsom make two sided magnetic strips that can mount to the side of your fridge. I use one to keep some utility knives out. Nice wood and made in US.

The rest of my users live in 3 Zwilling drawer racks, which are fine if your knives are not too long or tall…

Saw this post and was about to buy the magnetic strip when I walked into the kitchen and realized the fridge is in a cutout and the side isn’t exposed :(
