Hatsukokoro Komorebi 180x49mm
Blue #1 core w/ damascus iron cladding
Custom burnt oak octagon mono

Reposting this after having made some modifications to it. It's still unused and unsharpened.

I got it earlier this year from homebutcher but have since picked up a couple other 180s and this has just been chilling in the box. The proportions and profile are like a small gyuto, but they call it a santoku, so I'll let you decide for yourself. It's got a thin 50/50 lasery grind (0.85mm at 10mm behind the edge), but not quite nail flexing at the edge. Spine is sanjo style aggressive taper, sporting a whopping 4.4mm spine out of the handle.

I have repolished the blade, and re-etched it to be more subtle than the original. I polished up the spine and choil for comfort. And also swapped out the handle for a custom burnt oak mono. My finish of choice on the handle is hardwax oil so you get the water resistance while still maintaining that grippy natural wood texture. Sized to put the balance just slightly forward, which I find to be perfect for a knife of this size.

Here's some additional photos of the polished blade if you're interested.

Weekend bump, and probably final price drop. I've put a couple hours of work into this one to clean it up not including the custom handle.

I just got a Hado B1 damascus and the grind on it felt exactly the same as my Hatsukokoro B1 damascus 240mm that I had in terms of grind and steel. Measurements up the blade edge of the Hado (0.17/0.51/0.8/1.5mm at 1mm/5mm/10mm/20mm) were within 0.05mm of one another at every point. The blade measurements on this 180mm for the first 20mm behind the edge were even closer (0.18/0.55/0.83/1.5mm at 1mm/5mm/10mm/20mm). So I would expect performance to feel very similar to the Hado.

This would’ve been mine long ago before even being posted if I would not buy a 180 mm Yoshikane from Millertime.

Great knife with a great handle and tweaked (balanced) as should be by Brandon.

Congratulations to the buyer, you got yourself a nice mini gyuto buddy. Blue 1 dammy with a rounded spine and choil and water quenched and finished on stones.
