Very sad news.

That’s a hard blow, if there ever was one.
Hope no one got hurt
Carbon said his family are all fine so that's good at least. Hope he has some good insurance. I was just thinking I'd like to get a Manaka someday, I liked the one I handled. Hope he can get his business set up again ASAP, wonder if he can rent some space elsewhere while his shop is rebuilt.

I wonder if he will even rebuild? I can't recall the details but some time back on IG he posted about getting back into the shop after an illness or injury or something. He lamented what a struggle it was both physically and mentally to go back to blacksmithing. I could be wrong but at the time I got impression he was doubting if he really wanted to keep doing it.

Excerpt from his email -

… Recently, on July 4th at around 11:30pm Japan time, a fire broke out at the factory, completely burning down the factory, warehouse, and one vehicle.

My family and I managed to escape just in time and were not injured. It was truly a miracle. It's scary to even think about what would have happened if I had been a little later…

Thank you Joe, very glad to hear no one is hurt.

From the IG story it kind sounded like he wanted to restart. It would a sad loss for the knife world but if he wants to quit then that's totally understandable

Manaka also sent me an email a couple hours ago because I have an order pending with him (I also just received a beautiful knife from him about one week ago). I did not expect him to email me about my order given the circumstances, so I was a bit surprised by it. He attached a pic and explained what happened and even apologized because he won't be able to complete my order on time! He also asked if I wanted him to continue with my order! Needless to say, I told him to focus on himself, his family and rebuilding his shop and to take all the time he needs with my order.

He said that it will take about 3 months to rebuild his workshop and another 6 months to complete my order. He also said that the steel and iron materials are safe, so he can start forging again as soon as the factory is rebuilt.

What a campaigner! Thanks for this.

Tax deductible 👍

But a very kind thing to do anyway, I agree
I think generally... only certain organizations can claim the status needed for a deduction of that size of donation. This is not one of them.

Generosity here does not need dilution. I think it was in jest here :), but just wanted to make sure to clarify for internet....

Damn after all that can't believe he already has the timeline laid out. What did you order from him? Curious if there is an advantage to ordering direct vs a shop, any fun options?

Wonder if he would take a new order now, wouldn't mind giving him a deposit to help with the shop
So he has three different styles within his "ENN" line. I have two of the three, so I just ordered the last one to complete my collection. As far as customization, I'm not sure if you can get too wild due to the language barrier. My customization was limited to length and height dimensions, and I also asked for a flatter profile... he didn't understand what I meant by "flat" (he uses Google translate), so I had to send pictures and explain. So I'm not too sure how far you'll get if you get detailed with your customization.

So, does anyone know if he is rebuilding yet? The fundraiser says he was donated a total of $58,000 online + offline.
