I ve basic question.
I gott couple of new narural stones. It should be more like razor stones (probably asagi and nakayama) but you never know how it ll perform on knives...

I d like to try em. Here is my situation and would like to know “best practice”.

Have kiridashi (blue / watetsu), now with little used uchi finish.

1) Should I just use it as it is and I ll see the potential of the stone?

2) I should go down to 1k synth, 3k synth and 6k synth (it ll make semi mirror with no contrast) erase all the scraches and then try the stones.

3) or should I go 1k synth and then Natural progression (natsuya, hideriyama - makes really nice contrast) and finally new stones?

I guess it s important the 1k synth and pefectly clear/level the bevel.
Have two 1k synth SS chosera and vitrified diamond 1k - I guess VD should do better job...

Thx

My experience is that even a hard nakayama can refine a 1k edge if you hit at the right angle (sharpen the neighborhood of the very apex).

It's a different story with polishing though. If you are inclined to do that, go the route 2 + hideriyama, then your hard new stones with slurry.

so did 2) with hideriama before “nakayama kiita”

it gave prety nice finish.

And now if I want to try the second stone I should go once again all the way 2) with hideriyama?

For polishing, I alternate between an aizu or rika 5k before hitting jnat finishers. Depending on the jnat you're trying to test, you may want to go back down to this level to get a better sense of how the stones perform. My hideriyama is muddy but pretty fine (maybe around 8k) so if the stones you want to compare are around that level, it'll probably be harder to see the differences. I've read that steps between stones should roughly be 1:3 so 1k>3k>9k

That being said, different combos of stones/sequence/knife will produce different results so have fun experimenting!
