with the slowest cpu 2,4ghz. latest os though. mint 21. didn't update jack ****.

these old laptops really suck ass to be honest. i'm living at a coworkers place right now. since i found a massive amount of mould in the house i was renting. hasn't coughed a single time in 2 weeks now.

feel better. maybe **** turns around soon?
i dont know.

well. now im down in the living room burning wood to get warm. and its about 25c now. and its free.

so i figured i needed to have a can down here to do some surfing on. dusted off the old t400 from 2010.
i actually started it up 2 years ago to extract some files. and then it said the battery was 97% good. almost as new. and it should since i set it to never charge above 80%

and now the battery indicator is blinking yellow. and if i pull the plug the laptop dies immediately. i think this is by design. i think they have a timer chip in the battery so it reports "self destruction" after 10 years on the day. there is 0.0% chance the battery "just died" while doing absolutely nothing. when it was good 2 years ago. and then it was 10 years old. you gotta be ******* kidding me.

----------------------

now i think i complained enough about that. so lets talk old laptops. this was the cheapest t400 i could buy in 2010. 1000€. it has a TN screen. 1200something times 800something rez. and its truly sucks ass. the harddrive is a wd black 2,5 inch and that was the best **** back in 2011 or so. but it also seems to suck ass somehow.

HT is enabled in bios but the OS only seems to see 2 cores. and those are running at a leisure 99 and 67% just by streaming a song off YT and posting this 10 tabs at most open. . its also quite hot underneath, but hey i'm not complaining. feels nice with a bit of heat. running at 80% ram of my 6gb.

everything is quite sluggish to be honest. no where near realtime. wow **** the audio just cut out. oh now its back again. just a regular cpu spike. :)

whats good with this? its free. and it actually works. but compared to my t14s with ryzen 7 from like 2 years ago. this feels like stone age crap. the keyboard is actually quite good though. also the ABs plastic cover around the keyboard and touchpad is made out of actual ABS plastic, not magnesium. and it feels like it too. the touchpad is not multitouch. and i was expecting this to be a problem since i never use the buttons anymore but to be honest this is actually a non problem. its edge scrolling buts its responsive and sensitive (didn't even touch the settings at all here, stock).

i stopped using this thinkpad computer in maybe 2014 or so. then i ran a dell 6400 series atg (with carrying handle). but that keyboard is now almost completely dead, cant even log in. and also the screen started leaking out liquid. after maybe 50 flights or so. just outside the warranty. and that one was 3 kilos.

then i got a dell rugged (with built in handle), 5400 or something. but i gave it away. since it was too heavy to use in my bed. otherwise that would have been my main laptop now. ****** screen though. it was 4 grand can when new. the atg too.

long live thinkpads!! can't really complain here really. 13 years now and it still works. kinda. :)

i'm blogging to you from a 2012 jaggBook Pro.. the last good laptop apple made before that shitheel jony ive f'd everything up lol. now that he's out of the picture, they finally have respectable looking machines again not chasing thinness and useless emoji bars. but wow, it took them about 10 years.

anyways, this thing is still going strong, and parts are cheap for it on ebay. replaced a fan the other day for about $7 shipped.

hardware has been more than good enough for everyday use cases for quite some time. usually it's the software that screws us over and forces us to upgrade due to lack of support.

the macbooks have always been solid i think. alu construction. always good screens. (i dont like glossy screens though) usually quite high performance for the time.
and with your old one you can upgrade it. from complete crap to only like quite ******. if youre willing to spend money on it (i wouldn't).

imo dont spend money on old laptops. buy new laptops.
while the old crap is cerntainly usable for posting post on the internet its getting close to that this is actually the only thing they can do now.

when i started this old can up i saw it was running mint 9. it used 193mb ram when idling. lol. those were the days. mint 21 consumes at least 5-600mb these days. maybe even 800. maybe even a gig.

.................

installed win 11 on a coworkers new t14 last week. it occupies 50 gig installed. and consumes 5gigs just to run it. dafuq. hhahaha yeah dont know what to say here really. its that ******.

i installed lm21 on this old fukr and everything just works. no drivers no nothing. it usually does with lm. i'm actually a bit surprized that hw from2010 is fully supported and also fully functional with a recent os as this. but it is.

I have an HP laptop that is like 4 years old or so. It started getting crappy so I got a new battery and quadrupled the ram. It's much faster now for everything except program loading. I'm considering swapping in a ssd for the conventional hd. They are pretty cheap for a 1TB and I only use about 300 gigs now running whatever the newest Windows is called. Mostly just using it for Excel and web. Worthwhile upgrade?

a worthwile upgrade would be mint 21 i'd say. you can install it side by side with windows. and you can even run if from the usb stick without installing it.

i customize my install be adjusting its "appearance". under the "appearance" settings.
controls - mint y dark
window border - clearlooks
icons - mint x dark

then i adjust the screensaver so it doesn't lock me out after 5 minutes of inactivity and then some power manager stuff.

then obviously a lot of firefox customizations in the settings.

----------------

this will be the biggest upgrade in percieved performance for any windows user imo. getting another os that ends with inux. i prefer mint because it just works. i just installed it on my coworkers t14 gen 2 with intel. everything just works out of the box. and the install took around 5-6 minutes. username, timezone, pw, kb layout, language. thats it.

i seem to have found a problem. temps are 85 and 95deg C. probably the thermal paste drying out. need to change that.

an SSD is probably the biggest improvement you can make to a computer, night and day difference from a standard hard drive. Boots way faster, loads programs way faster

Put in an SSD, get another 10+ years out of it. Maybe some more RAM, if you're up to the search.
