Curious how to handle the situation in the title. If i burn it in, the handle will be too far up the tang and if i place it where i want there will be wobble. A pile of hot glue or epoxy to cement it in place, or what's the best course of action here?

I just dealt with this problem. M1K3 gives some good advice. Depending on how much bigger the slot is, you might need the wood. The hot glue has some flex in it. Even once the glue is completely hardened, the blade might have a bit too much side to side wobble. I used some sandwich picks that i shaved down

I just did the tostadas method and it worked like a charm. Shave a bunch of (cold) hot glue stick in to hole, heat tang with torch, and insert. Hold steady and straight for a minute or two till it sets and you're good to go. Use a ton of glue, like fill up the hole. Took about half a stick maybe a little less and just wipe off residue while still hot.

After it cools, use heat gun to smooth any bubbles or bumps and a hot nail if needed.

i more or less did that too. I probably used too little glue, so it's slightly wobbly if you wangle it about, but not problematic.

hot glue and beeswax.
why hot glue and beeswax? Easier to get out later? easier to get in? do you layer them or mix them?

does anyone ever use low-temp hot-glue like they sell for kids craft projects, or just the standard high-temp kind?

Not necessarily both on the same knife, those are just the two things I use. But sometimes I do use both and use glue to, uh, glue the thing in lower down and add some wax around the top of the hole to create a seal if no glue is there.
