Hey KKFers

Reposting a question I posted on a different thread.

Basically I had just purchased a Sakimaru, the tanto tip is not sharpened.

Blunt sharp tip as a fellow members called it.

Anyone had similar experience ?

Positing a reply for future references, retailer came back and explained that ‘Sakimaru’ means the tip is not sharp :)

Perfectly normal, almost all sakimaru knives come with tips that on a good day will maybe go through printer paper but are not as sharp as the rest of the knife. If you get one that cuts well chances are there’s quite a bit of a secondary bevel.
Tuna knives leave up to a millimeter of thickness at the tip, regular takohiki as well. The tips aren’t used anyway.

My opinion here but
there may be potential legal issues for knives makers/forgers/sharpeners, where police or authorities may call these sakimaru knives as "Japanese swords", ended up makers to get more restrictions / or possible fines/penalties making them. I'm pretty sure there're way more restrictions making weapons in Japan.

I heard that's why makers in Japan are hesitant to make curved-Sashimi knives.

So by not sharpening tip on sakimaru knives, it can lower cost, save sharpeners time, and provide factors of differences from Japanese swords.

Also, Saki-maru, the direct translation is "round tip".

It clearly doesn't really stop them from making curved sashimi-knives.

yeah... it's kind of gray area.
Nakagawa clearly said he's not gonna make extra-curved sakimaru for Japanese retailers anymore (souce: Instagram, if I remembered clearly).

The zangetsu was on my list!

There's a 300mm one on sale at CKTG, if that's something you're looking for.

If you like sword-like designs a lot and are actively looking to buy, maybe start a recommendation thread for sakimaru, curved sakimaru, and/or tsurugi-yanagiba's?
