I plan to mount a natural stone to a wooden dai for the first time. I normally seal my stones with shellac. The wooden dai is hinoki wood that’s rot and warp resistant. Should I seal the wooden dai with shellac as well before mounting? Or not necessary.

I’ve sealed some of mine before mounting them. It can’t hurt and would definitely help keeping the wood from saturating. I also would recommend sealing the wood if it has any nice grains for visual appeal and easy cleanup.

If your dai is a carved out depression and the stone fits tightly I would definitely take that into consideration. Could affect the fitting.

Sealing it is a good idea.
Shellac is an old school cool finish with out all the chems in other more modern finishes these days. I would go with several not to thick coats light sanding in between, the more the better really.
Shellac over henoki, hell ya. 👍
