Finishing up on this one. Iron wood with faux ivory cap. Really great grain movement and depending on the angle of light you can see lighter sapwood peek through behind some of the darker sections. 130mm and 53 grams. Was originally heading towards a 180 petty, then tokushu dropped some 240 Shindos (without handles) and now it’s heading to the big leagues. Lighter handle will help keep the knife with a forward balance and I’m thinking they’ll make a nice match!
What a magnificent piece of wood. You got the best out of it too. Compliments to the chef

Finished up a new handle with curly redwood, copper, and black horn ferrule.

Pretty happy with this one - I did five cycles of CA glue, sand, cure to fill the grain of the unstabilized redwood. The redwood is super light too, similar to pine, so a great handle for a lightweight knife like this Kipp.

Really nice! Respects / pays homage to the ‘stock Kipp’ aesthetic with a vibrant twist 👏

Would love to get a redwood handle from you one day. Absolutely beautiful work! Does redwood always need to be stabilised?
Redwood is a pretty durable wood. People use it all the time for outdoor applications like decks. So I wouldn't say it needs stabilization. However redwood is very soft, so it's easy to dent. For that reason I prefer to stabilize it for knife handle applications. Redwood burl absolutely needs to be stabilized for handles.

I have a curly redwood handle from Jonas of Isasmedjian, that has unreal dimensionality and depth. I was hoping to achieve a similar effect with all the layers of CA glue and sanding, but maybe I would need to start with stabilized wood to get that depth.

If you ever find yourself in Crescent City CA, there is the Curly Redwood Inn. I’ve stayed there twice. All the paneling was cut from one tree.
