Well, it was a good SKP* week around here. A Murata parer and a Munetoshi petty completed my collections of those two makers (well, maybe).

*Short Knife Procurement - another one you won’t find in the acronym help file. So confusing to us freshmen!

After missing the Migaki SLD Damascus Yoshikane multiple times on BST finally lucky enough to snag it. In hand quite handle heavy with the balance at the ferrule and the blade was a bit scuffed up with some pitting in the core. After getting advice from Lucas Gumbiner on IG , I decided to modify the handle (Dremel with sanding wheels to rough it in then fine tuned with micromesh progression) to move the balance in front of the heel (removed 4 grams) Then tackled a full blade refurbish.Thinned the edge , sanded 800/10/1500/2000K, polished with diamond paste then four cycles of HCL etch and polish.

Made this sanding guide and bought the hand sander at Home Depot. I use the black rubber piece to level the blade and the side to guide the sander keeping the sanding marks parallel (free hand sanding I’d get wavy which is more noticeable) For close to the ferrule I use the top rail and turn the sander side ways My last 25 or so strokes are always on guided rail and heel tip - slow and straight.
Micromesh pads are also helpful at the ferrule and I also have hard felt and diamond paste if needed for the really square ferrules. The Yoshikane have a curve so the hand sander progression worked well
Also don’t sand past the tip will round it off

Sometimes it's nice to be able to say you reached an end game. There is certainly no topping this for petties imo. Been trying to get a knife from Rob for awhile, and finally got lucky on the last lotto. I really wanted to get a gyuto from him and will still be trying...but happy to say I never need another petty again. Blue 1+ pattern welded wrought iron.

I’m not much of a petty guy either… but I’d definitely find myself using that. So beautiful and if Rob made it I already know how performance would be. Can’t wait for my name to get pulled….

Just found out it's also like the sharpest knife of all time. Can't wait to put it to use

I like Kamon's work too and I think his KU Dentys are quite his signatures so I needed one. The wait has definitely paid off. For the handle I wanted to go some classy theme, hidden pins in front and some facets in the back to make it more interesting. Sent him some wood.

At 280g? That’s about a perfect knife right there

She said I couldn't buy another knife, she did not say I couldn't buy four of them, however.

Shigefusa 165mm
Takeo Murata 130mm blue #1
Hatsukokoro Yoake 250mm
Togiharu Inox Petty 150mm

My first shig and it might be overtaking my dollar store TF as my favorite nakiri.
The Yoake should be a fun little project to add to the list. Great knife so far, but a bit of that wabi and sabi sauce towards the heel.
