Sun? What is this?

Can someone explain to me the measurement term "sun" and how it works/relates to knives. In another thread, a Murrar Carter knife is mentioned at 8.1 sun. how does this relate to imperial/metric?

And if you do use sun as a unit of measure in your knives, you have to have an elaborate product code with the real mm length embedded

This is a real Carter product code. 8.1JPY242X369H/WB

I think the number before the 'X' in Carter's product code is the mm length. Just to make it more confusing though, that product above is wrong. 8.0 sun is 242 mm, not 8.1 sun. The bottom line is that I always use the number before the 'X' when viewing Carter's knives and ignore the sun measure.

So Dave is correct, it is there just to confuse.
