Unfortunately got to let this go for moving funds, need this gone fast, I'll only have 1 more chance to send this off during the week. I bought the blade on its own and got a Taihei tagayasan blonde horn ferrule handle, the handle is amazing. This has only seen test cuts. Anyone that's used a tetsujin probably knows that these things have some pretty intense friction and poor food release when they arrive, so my first thought was to play around with the finish to remedy this, this was before I was told that the food release improves with patina development. Even so, I'm pretty happy with the finish, and it has made it a slightly better performer, definitely less friction. I tried to polish it shig style, big fan of the shig polish, plus it was one of the better performing finishes I tried. Finished it on an tomae (don't know any more about the stone than that), gave it those horizontal lines. Final inconsistencies were worked out with kiita fingerstones and slurry, still a decent contrast between the core and the cladding. Please see the measurements below:
Blade length: 231 mm
Heel height: 49.5 mm
Spine thickness at handle: 3.5 mm
Spine thickness at 1/2 way: 2.5 mm
Weight: 195 g
Blade cost $390, handle was $85, deducting $50 for the changes polish, price is $425 + shipping.
Will put up some better photos tomorrow.
