Just slightly off topic but tell me you guys are using pirateship to ship your things and not going to the post office or ups or whatever your local courier is to actually buy the labels there.

Admittedly I did not read all 14 pages of this thread so sorry if it's been mentioned.

shipping one LP from Canada to the EU supposedly is 49 Canadian $ ...either the rate has dropped incredibly or shipping rates gone crazy...does anyone here have a tip to an affordable courier for records?

The problem with an LP is that you need a large box to protect it (say 13"x13"x3"). When you get to something that size, but is inherently light, carriers switch over to cube weight. So something that weighs 1lb will get billed as 4lb.

I just tried an estimate of 13x13x4 at 1lb to Rotterdam (as I'm guessing you're in NL based on your username) and it came back as $79CAD. This was the only via a quick quote using a broker type service.

thanks for that effort! I am indeed in the Netherlands!

typically shipping a record is like 10-15 euro within the EU....which already is expensive IMHO...my last shipment from California did set me back 24 USD...so I do not get how Canada is so much more expensive (the seller is also flabbergasted by the quote of 49 Cd$)

Is "media mail" an option?

So I just checked on the Canada Post site. Same size package as I noted (13x13x3", 1lb) untracked could be shipped for $30CAD via air. Tracking raises that up to $65CAD.

For some reason Canadian rates off the North American continent are just more expensive. Not sure why that is, but it just seems to be the way.

the seller found an alternative for 26 Cnd, thanks for your support!

Just had my new Helqvist beeing sent back to Sweden because it could not be imported to Germany because it contained a "forbidden good" according to local german DHL.
Did anybody have such an experiance recently? know that somehow in UK with royal mail it was a problem to ship knives, but with standard DHL (regular national post service, not "DHL Express") I haven't had any issues so far. did some regulation change with the new year?

Wait a second...there is no import whatsoever...

DHL is going crazy with import/export rules (I tried to ship roasted coffee with them and they flat out refused to send it anyhow, although I did provide them with the written exception for FDA and customs regulations)....try someone else...

My quick reference for what's prohibited to ship to a country - Canada Post - doesn't show any form of kitchen knife (only switchblades and likes). My suggestion is to have it listed as kitchen cutlery on the customs paperwork when it gets reshipped.

customs paperwork
There is no Customs paperwork since there is no Custom duties in EU.
While Germany did tighten their wepon laws end of last year, it doesn't really make a difference for shipping kitchen knives or transporting them. Just aren't really allowed to wear EDC anymore in public which is already infuriating enough, even though I don't wear one. But there are still quite some exceptions.
My best guess is someone who has no clue but is overeager took it into their hands. Bad luck.

kinda anecdotal, but a friend of mine works for fedex express and mentioned the other day they're closing down/merging some big hubs, including one here in NYC. from the sounds of it they're having drivers cover a larger area but making fewer stops and there's been talks of merging ground/express together. didnt really explain much more than that, but i could see issues w/ fedex cropping up a bit more as things get shuffled and drivers are quitting/being let go.

I'm in CT and had a USPS knife go from GA --> MA --> MD --> MA --> CT. Maybe they just want the extra work
I had a friend ship a bit of contraband (liquor) from SoCal to somewhere near San Luis Obispo. The package arrived intact weeks late after having been tracked through Kentucky. What the (yeah that.)
