Silly title aside, I saw this thread, probably from before many of us were members let alone interested in spending eyewatering amounts on hunks of steel or wood.

I’d been doing some google-fu, trying to find some Aomori hiba in an extra large size. The largest I was finding were 300x600mmx33mm. A bit narrow and way thinner than I was hoping to find. I did find it interesting when one Japanese wood database tried to defend hiba from apparently some historical preconceptions that it’s essentially just an inferior hinoki.

Anywho, in the course of googling apparently googles incredible (lol) search algorithm went “anglicized Japanese words? Cutting board? Aomori hiba??… He must want hinoki”. For once, I’d consider the googling to be goofing as a good thing. I think I’ve found the holy grail of hinoki. Behold, may OSHA tremble in anticipation of invading your living space to smack “STAND CLEAR OF SWING RADIUS” stickers on each side of the board whenever you attempt to move it. Behold, in all of its terrible, fragrant and radiant glory. The 1000x400x105, single piece of hinoki carved from the bleeding, longing heart of a tree likely older than any of us

They also do customs, so I’ll probably investigate if they can make a shorter, wider piece to fit a stove top better. I highly suspect they can’t due to what appears to be a distinct lack of tree past 400mm, but worth a shot.

So yeah, if anyone from 2012 is still looking for a monstrous piece of hinoki, this seems to be the place for it. They also apparently do countertops if you need to open a swank omakase spot. Feels like reasonable prices for it being a gargantuan slab of wood too, but I’m not much of a wood worker to know. Shipping is apparently free to at least to where I was checking in the eastern US. The possible unknown customs, however fill me with mild concern like a cat that hasn’t heard the food bowl 9.5 minutes past its regularly scheduled feeding time.

All my cutting boards are Hinoki, but if I were after a larger custom board I'd save some money and go with Sitka Spruce.
