But what if you need your shihan to be exactly 53.5mm in height 235mm in length and the tapering exactly 3.5mm at end -> 1.75 exactly at mid point and .2mm at the tip?
Lord does anyone get that specific? I claim to be anal when it comes to knife design, but my requirements are generally just materials, profile and minimum dimensions. Aka at least 60mm height, at least 8mm above the heel, as much taper as you can accomplish, ignore any weight since it’s irrelevant to me. Don’t care if the smith goes over and I always make that clear. Maybe I’m not as bad as I thought outside or extreme measurements 🤣

100% a exaggeration on my part. But also would not be surprised if there was a knife maker confidential…

Yes.

I've thought about starting a thread to that effect at least every month for the last two years.

The requests I've gotten...oh man.

Hey matt,

I have a 200 cad budget. I would like a 270x60mm apex ultra honyaki with a mt fuji hamon.

I’m a little picky about dimensions so try to stay as close to spec as possible. Also is stone polishing extra?

Let me know as soon as possible

Xoxo

Hey matt,

I have a 200 cad budget. I would like a 270x60mm apex ultra San mai honyaki with a mt fuji hamon. And an S-grind with 7 fullers. And a 10mm spine to 0.15mm tip, but not wispy!

I’m a little picky about dimensions so try to stay as close to spec as possible, I will demand a 40% discount if the dimensions are out by 0.5mm or more. Also is stone polishing extra?

Let me know as soon as possible, as I want this ready for my birthday in four days.

Xoxo
Fixed a few bits in bold.

Does @Carl Kotte have some explaining to do?
Actually carbon clad SS is not so unreasonable by comparison.
I just want to make sure. For the record. Before the kkf pitchforks come out. That it wasn't me.
No, not you either.

Ahhhhhhh........fine I'll do it. Just not today. For now suffice it to say that....well, you know those keyword laden titles on aliexpress and amazon? Well, seems like some people think they can get knives like that, but with more unreasonable details...

I would like a honyaki 63 layer Damascus dragon pattern triple ice hardened Japanese core steel with tanto tip, and matching display stand. $89 should do it, no?

I'll spend up to $400 on a kitchen knife without much thought, between there and $700 is custom knife money for me and I've been exceedingly happy with what I'm getting for that amount but $700 is my max.

Meanwhile the thought of spending more than $100 for a pocket knife makes my skin crawl. Not a shot at Jedy or anyone else that does it, but I've lost far too many pocket knives to the swamp/had a corn leaf slip between the clip and my pocket to pop it out/TSA confiscation/falls off truck tailgate/etc. to be comfortable spending much on them. Due to the nature of my work, and my own laziness for not carrying loads of tools through the woods, I end up abusing the hell out of my folders/field knives. Even the few higher end folders I have I baby because of cost/value and often don't bring them into the field with me because I'm not gonna use a $200+ knife as a screwdriver or pry bar. With a $30 Gerber I don't give a damn and it becomes far more useful to me, even though the edge sucks.

Just different strokes for different folks I reckon, I know the EDC community may not spend more than basic Wusthof money on kitchen knives.
people buy expensive pocket knives to open envelopes and cut the tape on packages, not actual hard use. Just like their expensive gyuto is used only to sloppily chop an onion. 🤣

We wasn’t trying to push you to do it or anything 🤷‍♂️

This is a very artistic photo!

What’s generating the green dot / light?
I always get that green dot when I'm taking pics with my camera pointed at the sun. It's annoying because I don't think there's any way to prevent it from happening if you're taking a pic of the sun. I have an iphone 12, and it's been present on every version I can remember. Not sure if the newer models have rectified that issue.
