Hey, I'm not sure this is the right thread but I'm kinda new to this and tried developing some natural patina by cutting some acidic food. However I can see this white-ish fogish stuff on the knife now. Is it part of the patina or is it something else? It's kinda hard to take a picture of so I'm not sure it's clear what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance for your help

It's hard to tell, but it looks to have some sort of coating. Maybe contact the maker, or simply wipe with some acetone.

Lacquer thinner works better than acetone. Wear nitrile gloves. After that, don’t pester the maker. That’s bush league.

I see thanks. Does it matter if it appeared after food prep? And i'm not the first owner. It's a mcx spare apex ultra. Someone pm'ed me saying it's very very mild patina

I had a couple Spare MCXs and neither had lacquer, so probably patina as noted. I think I’ve heard Apex Ultra patinas slowly, so that may be what you’re seeing as well. Different steels patina differently, but your best chance of getting a blue patina is to cut cooked meats especially beef.

Very pretty!!
ApexUltra seems to take some work to develop a patina. As has been said, hot proteins are great. You can leave the blade covered for a while to help that along.

Taken a while to get this patina on my MCX Spåre AU

When you say a while, is it a couple minutes or like 15minutes?

I'll wash my blade down after I finish my prep, but once I cut up my protein for dinner, it tends to stay wet until I'm finished eating which could be 30 minutes plus.

ApexUltra is pretty resistant. I made a board sauce (minced herbs, oil and balsamic vinegar) and sliced flank steak on top of it. Left the blade while we ate and got a dark black patina. No rust or anything.

I'm highly impressed with the treatment of this steel.
