Whats the best knife to hack open something as hard as a coconut?

Take your favorite gyuto, remove the handle and use the tang to hack at it.

Used to open green coconuts with a machete because that's what I had when I went to tropical beaches.

Old coconuts the house? Probably the spine of a Himalayan Imports khukuri.

Breaking the nut is easy, a simple wack on the concrete drive is enough. Getting the husk off is the more difficult part.

I've opened more coconuts than I could count, just used a pickaxe.

I used my Tesshu/munetoshi meat cleaver to hack off the top of two coconuts. It took some effort but the knife did well.

Indeed . The knife was repaired and is a petty now.
Best part is that the Au pair tried to convince my friend that her four year old daughter did this.

I use a meat cleaver for opening coconuts. Rotating the coconut around as you crack the top open
