I have not had much success in burr removal with artificial corks.

+1 I usually just make sure it feels sharper with each stone and usually the burr just goes away without any special processing. As for developing an even burr across the entire edge, that isn't really the point. You want to make sure you are not changing your profile for the worst but changing your profile is not a bad thing, in and of itself....On raising a burr with each stone - NO - ...indicate that you've succesfully hit the entire edge with the stone...
