How come you find a portion of the ura unpolished on many yanagiba near the tang?

like this shig for example

Beautiful Shig kitaeji. It is polished to a misty to show of the soft cladding. Some forger makes wavy line at the back, and contrast is showing that off too.

This is a function of the way that these knives are forged. When the hard steel and soft steel are forge welded together, it is done in such a way that there is some exposed soft steel in the area that will become the tang. The "unpolished" part that you are talking about is part of this… And that soft steel continues on all the way through the tank. The hard steel that composes the edge is the rest of the part that you see polished on the backside. Does that make sense?

I've poked around a few times to find a name for this but never found it. Is there a name?
